Dismissive
Like most female autoimmune patients, I’ve left too many appointments in tears because the physician either didn’t believe me or didn’t know what to do with all the strange symptoms that were destroying my quality of life. It took years of those appointments before I was finally referred to a rheumatologist. I was overjoyed that someone would look at my autoimmune, orthopedic and surgical histories, put them all together and help me. Instead, I got someone who rolled her eyes and raised her voice at me, assuming I was making it all up in order to get medication. Since then, I’ve seen an eye doctor who confirmed I’ll need plugs and an orthopedic surgeon who confirmed that my Morton’s neuroma was from RA. Next month, I’ll have my sixth lysis of adhesions for yet another autoimmune condition. Doctors who choose to treat autoimmune issues should know that diagnosing these conditions isn’t neat, tidy and textbook - and you don’t judge a book by its cover.

almost lead to my death
Telehealth
Where to even begin… she didn’t take my symptoms seriously, declined to order life-saving testing despite strong indications to run those tests (in favor of more x-rays which showed nothing), kept booking me as “telehealth” despite me being in crisis-level pain, inferred that I am a hypochondriac… gave me genuine PTSD from dealing with her and she almost caused my death since it turns out I was very, very ill.

Was referred to Dr. Shaw in 2014 with gout. She immediately recognized my severe level of pain and started treatment. She then drained my knee quite painlessly (as I shared my fear of needle draining). Her recommended preventative treatment plan has helped me avoid another gout attack. Then she started to treat my other knee (ligament & cartilage damage). We're just about to start injections & physical therapy. I couldn't be more pleased & trusting of Dr. Shaw!
