Excellent Doctor
Dr. Carey is very kind and a really good doctor. I am a woman and he NEVER talks down to me or my son. He has never push his political beliefs on us. I believe there is more to the story behind a lot of these reviews. the man they are describing is not Dr. Carey. A woman doctor referred me to him.

Why do I know his political beliefs?
I made an appointment for a mental crisis and he turned it into a political debate that ended in me not only knowing his political beliefs but being chastised for my own. His parting words as he KICKED me out of his office: “you should educate yourself” and he discontinued and lowered all my maintenance meds (including those intended for pain relief) that he provided despite my objections. He actually asked one by one do you use this for pain also. It felt vindictive. He used my crisis to actually push a political agenda. What!?!?

I’d give 10 stars if I could. He listens. He’s a wealth of knowledge. He cares. In the past, I’ve not connected well with psychiatrists or psychologists. I’ve always been left feeling like they wasted my time. Dr. Carey has already helped me more in 3 visits than years worth with others. I’m so relieved to finally have a dr I can trust. He is very direct and factual, so I can see how a defensive person may dislike how he communicates. For me, it’s refreshing. I don’t need a dr that will sugar coat things or only say what I think I want to hear. Treatment is often uncomfortable. It’s supposed to be. 10 stars

This little thing won't let me type enough to truly let you know how terrible this man is, but as best I can, he will act like he cares but he will talk over you (I'm a woman), he is a liar, he took me off 2 meds that helped b/c he saw them as "drugs" (ADD and anxiety meds), I ended up in the ER/psyc ward at KU, in last visit I asked for refills while I looked for new psyc but he instead tapered me off all remaining meds (thrown to the wind, he doesn't care) and then he also called the cops a CYA move in my opinion, horrible experience, would give zero stars if I could

Run as fast as you can! I was in-patient. He was rude to me, but friendly with my husband who is a psychologist with a PhD. I had previously always been treated at the Menninger Clinic, and was appalled that Stormant-Vail West was, at the time, just a place to park mentally ill or problem people. There was no therapy going on. I want to clarify that this was in 2016 when Carey was in charge.

i had made significant progress at the time I entered Dr. Carey’s care. However, he decided in our first meeting to change my medications anyway, despite the significant risks I expressed I felt would come with that decision. It has been two months, and I am currently writing this comment from the ER - my fourth visit due to panic attacks in this time. I have lost the savings I put aside to leave an abusive situation, due to emergency bills. I have been placed on involuntary leave of absence from my apprenticeship until my panic is controlled again. I expressed all of this to Dr. Carey, who instead preferred to continue trialing different medications that have never been effective for me and cause significant side effects. My second most recent panic attack caused me to miss my appointment with him, and I cannot be rescheduled for two months! I would have been better off with no doctor at all. Terrible.
