Dr. Mark Zafereo, MD

My experience with Dr.Zafereo was flawless. He and his team put me at ease immediately, answered all my questions and addressed any fears I had. He came highly recommended to me by one of his own colleagues, it doesn't get any better than that!

I am penning this review on behalf of my family; my mom, (patient) my sister, and myself for Dr. Mark E. Zafereo (Dr.Z). This review is written with gratitude, praise, and honor for a man the world of medicine calls “Doctor”, but to our family we call him “God’s Angel” here on earth. On March 22,2021 our mother was diagnosed with Papillary thyroid carcinoma and referred to MD Anderson, we did the only thing we knew to do and that was to pray, tell God what we wanted, trust him, and lean on our faith. God heard our prayer. On May 17, 2021, Dr. Zefereo walked into the room. Dr. Zafereo entered the room with such a presence that we knew our mom was in good hands. Dr. Zafereo held space to allow my sister and I to ask the newbie family question that consisted of fear and hope. The characteristic; patience, caring, honest, attentiveness and knowledge were truly present, but it was the very authenticity of how he spoke that resonated. We are forever grateful to Dr. Z.

Dr. Zafereo is a highly skilled and caring surgeon. He is the best. I highly recommend him. He performed a successful surgery for me.

Dr. Zafereo was very polite and professional, and showed genuine concern for my health and wellbeing. He is very attentive and listened to my take on the situation.

I came to MD Anderson on purpose from SD for a thyroid cancer. Dr. Zafereo describes what would happen before, during and after the surgery. I am feeling much better now and am thankful that there were not any complications during the surgery. Also. Dr Zafereo provides excellent work while performing surgery on me for thyroid cancer.

Amazing physician. He treated me for thyroid cancer. Excellent care, excellent follow up, super thorough, and most of all, incredibly personable.

I had an extremely good medical, personal, and spiritual experience with Dr. Zafereo; he addressed all aspects of my disease. He and the team at MD Anderson did very thorough testing to confirm my diagnosis of medullary thyroid cancer discovered in Tulsa and the likelihood of it spreading. The treatment options, details of surgery including the inherent risks and expected outcomes, as well as genetic counseling were communicated clearly. My surgery conducted on 11/12/19 was a success. It included a total thyroidectomy as well as central / right neck dissection. Vocal cords and parathyroid glands were preserved and my discrete incision is healing nicely. Dr. Zafereo states in one of his bios that “Thyroid surgery is my calling” and from my first encounter with him to my last visit, he oozes that calling. He is humble, compassionate, patient, kind, and confident. He does not promote faith, he lives it. And he just happens to be one of the top thyroid surgeons in the nation.

Dr. Zafereo is amazing! Last year, I was diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer that had spread into my trachea. I was terrified! He reassured me that he would be able to successfully operate. During my week long hospital stay, he visited me once or twice every day and encouraged me as he checked on my daily progress. The surgery was totally successful and he just released me at my 9 month follow up visit. I feel extremely blessed to have had Dr.Zafereo as my surgeon.

Dr. Zafereo is truly a blessing to our family. Our 11 yr old daughter had to undergo surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and Dr. Zafereo took such great care of her. He was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and walked us through every step of the way. We were terrified to have our baby undergo surgery, but knew that our daughter was in great hands and felt at ease and comfortable with Dr. Zafereo. We knew that our daughter was not just another patient to Dr. Zafereo and that he really cared about her and her well-being. He even made several follow-up calls after surgery just to see how she was doing and truly cared about us and our daughter. I could not have asked for a better doctor to watch over our baby girl!!! Thank you, Dr. Zafereo for taking such great care of our baby and for being you!!!

Saw Dr. Zafereo for a second opinion regarding cancer. He is so skilled and immediately puts you at ease. Being such a good clinician and surgeon he is able to explain things so easily. He hasn’t a sense of humor and is very caring.

Amazing doctor, He is an excellent surgeon. He kept me and my family well informed throughout the process. I had no pain after the surgery whatsoever. He is very compassionate and caring. I would highly recommend him to my family and friends. Very friendly and a great listener.

WOW! This guy knows his stuff! A young energetic knowledgeable doctor. He treats his patience like you want to be treated, with direct compassionate communication and honesty that wins your trust immediately. If you have thyroid issues and need help, he's the guy you want. The only thing that surpasses the high marks of Dr. Zafereo is the rating of his staff! The Doctor and his team make an uncomfortable situation palatable.

Dr Zafereo and his staff was outstanding. When I was diagnosed with cancer and the extensive surgery that was going to be required, Dr Zafereo was very under standing. He took a lot of time to explain everything in great detail.

I am truly blessed to have Dr. Zafereo as my surgeon when I had thyroid cancer. He is very knowledgable and an expert in his field. You can see and feel his genuine concern and caring for his patients. I have nothing but high regard for Dr. Zafereo, his team, and MD Anderson.

When I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer I found Dr. Mark Zafereo. I was so nervous but he is so knowledgeable, my fears were gone after the first meeting. I 100% knew what to expect: from the tests, to the surgery toe hospital and the aftercare. The fear of the unknown was gone. My surgery was a complete success. Dr Zafereo's saw me in the hospital the next day and has called me twice at home to see how I was doing. This doctor and his ENTIRE team are all so amazing. I would recommend highly.

He is a very caring and considerate Dr. He called the day after I was discharged from the hospital to personally check on how I was doing.
