Was great… now… not so much.
used him a few times (2 hips, 1 partial knee, 1 full knee) but this last time with the full knee was not the quality of care we had known from mercy for quite a few years. Mercy itself is a great hospital & the staff are absolutely amazing. This knee surgery back in November ended up getting a staph infection (not entirely blaming Dr hungerford for that) & he was very attentive to begin with but the last couple check ups have left a very disappointing taste….. he claims to have not had a single infection issue in I believe he said 10 years, so wouldn’t you be attentive to the one that you now have which was only days away from killing your patient? Apparently not. The last check up he was right outside the “room” we were in, even walked past us and didn’t say a single word. This patient isn’t a very forgettable man and you’d think the infected patient would be maybe a little more remembered…. Very disappointed and will not come back to him after using and recommending him for decades.

Knee surgery
I would not recommend Dr Hungerford. Overall Mercy Doctors are friendly, compassionate, care about patients and outcomes, and a few even have great sense of humor. I’m am very sorry to say Dr Hungerford exhibits none of those qualities. He may be a brilliant surgeon but appears only interested in surgery. He has little time to spend with you. The Hospital has built a staff around him to address this, from the receptionist , his PA’s, and Doctors who support him, but when he pops in, it may be for just a few minutes or as little time as possible, and he then moves on. It is a very efficient and profitable assembly line medical practice. He will not be the one explaining how surgery went or follow up. He has no empathy and comes across with little concern if recovery is difficult or complications arise, as he did his job. If you’re looking for a doctor who acts like he cares, or is interested in your best outcomes, he is not the doctor you should chose.

Not a good experience at all
Had my initial appointment with the DR and it was not good. Didn’t even introduce himself, never explained to me about my x-rays, never asked if I had any questions. I had a general sense that he didn’t even care and seemed busy showing off for another doctor who was present. I will not go back to him and will go to an orthopedic doctor most likely in the John Hopkins or AAMC health system. His style is not conducive to gaining trust with his patients.

Absolutely not. He is noncomunicative, has no bedside manners, and provided virtually no follow up after my simultaneous double knee replacement, which he recommended, although I had serious complications. He could not be reached for pain pill refills, and the painkiller dosages were inadequate. As a result, I had to be hospitalized again for pain management. (I was totally off painkillers a month after the surgery., no thanks to him. after I stopped the pain meds cold turkey.)The extreme, inadequately medicated, pain I suffered because he refused to deal adequately with my post surgical pain gave me PTSD. Technical surgical proficiency is not enough to make up for deficient post-surgical patient care! I love Mercy, but not him.

Dr. Hungerford performed a partial (medial) knee replacement on my left knee. His surgical skill (combined with his experience using Makoplasty) resulted in what appears to be precise placement. I am pain-free and can honestly say it feels natural - it does not feel as if there is a foreign object in my knee. The deep bone-on-bone medial knee pain I had (pre-op) was gone immediately after surgery. I was able to work with my PT to gradually/carefully rebuild my strength and flexibility as the tissues and nerves healed from the trauma of the surgery and I am back to my long, hilly hikes, yoga, and strength training classes. My barely 4" scar is thin and healed beautifully. I consulted with four different surgeons and clearly I chose the right one. Also, his office was responsive to my inquiries each time I reached out using the patient portal. I am thrilled to have my active lifestyle back after 6 months of limping (in pre-op pain) and I am glad I did not put off the surgery.

This is my second surgery with Dr. Hungerford. He isn’t very warm and engaging. His skilled hands and his ability to keep up with the current practices was essential to my speedy recovery. There were 7 years between surgeries. I really appreciated the updated procedures. I recently recommended him to my husband.

Was very pleased with the information provided before the surgery. There was always an answer to any questions I had. I felt prepared on surgery day. Post-op time at the hospital was good. I had good information and was prepared for my recuperation time at home.

Follow up from having both knees replaced in January 2017. No pain, was able to play racquetball again, at an A level. My movement and agility was far superior to my capabilities before my knee replacement. I’m nicknamed the $6 million man, if you remember that TV series back in the day.

I would recommend Dr. Hungerford as a surgeon. He is not a particularly warm person.....just gets the job done, efficiently. If building a warm relationship with a doctor is your priority, he's not your man. If knowing you have an excellent surgeon is your priority, then he's your man. I thought that followup visits were not personal, no real questions were asked by the staff (other than "how are you?" and I would have wanted more "what to expect" after the surgery info. Perhaps it is up to the patient (me in this case) to ask every questions I could think of????? BUT....would definitely use him again because he's an excellent surgeon.

I had a great experience with Dr. Hungerford and his staff. He listened to my problem and took the time to explain it to me. He showed my my x rays and explained them as well. I had seen three other surgeons who all had their minds made up when the walked in the door. I never had the feeling Dr. Hungerford was trying to sell me something.

My mom had both her hips replaced by Dr. Hungerford! I actually let her know about him because of hearing great things through patients at the clinic I work at. It’s rare you see both hips done at the same time but my mom had bone on bone and it was bad. She could barely walk. He did the anterior approach my mom did great. She is dancing, walking everyday, on her bike. My mom had nothing but nice things to say about Hungerford, his staff and the post PT nurses! She was a nurse for over 26 years and was very happy about her outcome and experience. I would highly recommend him to anyone for hip surgery!

My relationship with Dr. Marc began in the early 1990's as a result of a hip fracture from a skiing accident. It was initially repaired but as time went on the hip deteriorated requiring a hip replacement in 2001. I went back to skiing and 20 years later, I am still skiing and motoring around without issues on the same hip replacement. His care and concern on follow up appointments was always top notch...like his surgical skills. Thanks Doc..... you'll be my first call if I need an upgrade.

He acted like I was wasting « his time! I wasn’t ready for or do I NEED hip replacement so he didn’t have time for me. I learned nothing from the visit & am out more money because of him. I did mention occasional knee problems. He wanted to replace my knee & didn’t even have an ex ray of knee. He did point out arthritis in hip causing issues from an ex ray image. Big capitalist doctor will replace seems anything!! But do you really need this now? NO , I get by without OTC DRUGSUse homeopathy. How bad is it? NO OUTLOOK-replace! Are you getting by okay without drugs? YES I AM. This is the stuff that makes people hate medical professionals.

I had total hip replacement surgery on September 10, 2019. I had some concerns about several things and decided to make my 1-year follow up visit a few months early. When I called to make the appointment with the doctor in August, I said I had some issues that I wanted to discuss with the doctor and that is why I was scheduling it before the one year follow up. I went on to tell the person the problems I was having. When I arrived for the appointment , I was not seen by Dr. Hungerford but instead by one of his assistants. Although she was very nice, she did not give me any real explanation for the symptoms I was having. Having driven over 2 hours to see the doctor, I was very disappointed that I left without having my concerns addressed. I felt that the trip was a waste of time.

I had a total knee replacement with Dr. Hungerford. I would totally recommend him. He was very skilled and the surgery was very successful. His scheduling assistant was extremely helpful in scheduling surgery and answering all my questions before and after surgery. I feel that this office really cares about the health and welfare of their patients.

Topic: Compliment I would like to write that I am so pleased with Dr. Hungerford who did my hip replacement on January 29, 2018. He explained everything and assured me there wouldn't be any pain after the operation. I couldn't believe how great I felt during the next 6 weeks. I had absolutely no pain (just achy) and didn't need any pain pills, rehab or pt and after 6 weeks no cane. I have recommended your hospital and Dr. Hungerford to everyone that asked me about my surgery
