Patient Beware
Doctor has incredible soft skills; however, I noticed some discrepancies on my billing. Every single visit with her was marked as a code 99214 Established patient office or other outpatient visit, 30-39 minutes. Doctor was always late to my appointments and rarely ever spent more than 15 minutes (at MOST). She also always suggests very costly lab work—I'm married, but she recommended STI lab work that cost me nearly $800. After three years of her progressively getting comfortable with misusing billing codes, I am switching to a different doctor and medical group overall.

A capable physician and a wonderful, warm person.
Dr. Alula has been my Primary Care Physician since moving to San Diego about 4 years ago. Naturally, it is a difficult decision finding a new PCP, but as soon as I met her I felt I had made a good choice. She is the warmest and most caring PCP I have ever had. I am 76 years old and she has kept track of the ailments of increasing age, and referred me to specialists when appropriate. When my PSA (the marker for prostate problems) started to rise, she sent me to a urologist even though it was not yet in the danger zone, and I was resistant (call it denial), but she strongly encouraged me. As it turned out, I had an aggressive form of prostate cancer, and thanks to the excellent oncology and surgical staff at Scripps, I had it removed before it spread. Due to some decision on the part of the Scripps Coastal group (apparently the MBA's want bigger bonuses than they can justify from the profits from Medicare Advantage insurance patients), I need a new PCP, which I deeply regret.

I went to Dr. Alula for a regular appointment. She recommended unnecessary, costly medical procedures. When the results came back I was charged for the appointment she was 20 minutes late to and during this appointment she could not explain my results. Waste of time and money.

Dr. Alula was my primary care physician for ten years, until I moved away from San Diego. She was, by far, the most thorough, thoughtful, and compassionate of any of the doctors I've ever had. She just happened to be available when I went on the website, and I will always be grateful to her.

I love Dr Alula. She listens to me and treats me like I know my body since I have weird body reactions to drugs. She has sent me to the appropriate Drs if I need someone who treats my issue.

Last year my appointment was scheduled at 11:30. I check in at 11:15 and by the time I got inside the office was almost 2PM and to find out that the Dr was late for her Epic training and then had lunch and no one in the office have the courtesy to tell me, and all pointing at each other fault. This year nurse called this last Saturday to reschedule b/c Dr has conference and barked out "fine, note that we spoke" then today I call back to reschedule and to find out the Dr on vacation. Go figured!

I was new to California, trying to establish new overarching doctor i.e. GP to transfer all my prescriptions to and Dr Alula was very close to me. She told me in the State of CA you had to go to "Pain Clinic" - that she was not allowed to prescribe pain meds. Found this was totally untrue. Also her staff was very confrontational- would not pass on messages; would not return phone calls etc. Now I drive to Scripts Clinic in Carmel Valley to see Dr Kaylan Graham. Fantastic, does pain, great staff!
