Three years ago, I had bleeding on the 39th week of my pregnancy, and I was admitted to the ER for the evaluation of Preeclampsia. It has been three years now, and when looking back on my Chart, I have noticed that it says I reported previous alcohol use and I was tested for drugs without my consent. I have never smoked, drink alcohol, or used drugs. Dr. Kokkinaks evaluated me around 1:00 am and did the testing and charting. It got me thinking about the biases that a black woman suffers at this vulnerable moment.

Rushed me out and I was having a miscarriage
I had a positive pregnancy test and started bleeding the next day with two negative tests. I took the next day appointment that was not my location I took a 35 minute drive because I feared I was having another miscarriage. At 840am I was the only patient and I went back immediately and after vitals and a urine test. Louis came into my room and didn’t even sit at the computer desk in the room. He asked why was i here and I began to cry, telling him I wanted to make sure I wasn’t having a miscarriage again. He quickly dismissed me, that it wouldn’t be possible to be having a miscarriage. That I was definitely having a period, told me I was young and to go to shady grove because they aren’t delivering babies. I cried to him again and said I’m not having a miscarriage? He said no, winked at me and told me you got this. A less the 5 minute conversation, I left, no paperwork,no blood test, no sonogram. I went to the ER same day, I WAS PREGNANT AND MISCARRIED OR HAVING ECTOPIC PREGNANCY!

Since the first day that I’ve met him to today, it has been established that i’m Sticking with Him. Really knowlegeable , great bed side manner, honest , caring and takes his j’me with his patients. Dr Komminakos is the best. I wish and hope that on my due date he will be the one on call.

I saw Dr. K for my 21 week OB appointment while pregnant with my first baby. I was very pleased and taken back by his exceptional bedside manner. He is diligent, thorough, kind and empathetic. Truly a great doctor and really takes the time to go over and explain things during visits. Very pleased with my visit with Dr. K.
