Excellent, Knowledgeable Doctor that Listens
I was on hydroxychloroquine and Methotrexate for recent diagnosis of RA and just had a mild case of COVID. I was experiencing severe numbness and weakness in my arms and legs. My knees hurt so bad I could barely walk or get up out a chair. After seeing several doctors including orthopedic doctors my PCP suggested Dr Bluth. The checkup was very thorough. Dr Bluth really cared about helping me find out what was going on. He demonstrated empathy and patience with the visit. After his testing was good, he left it to me about getting MRI of the brain and neck to rule out other conditions. I appreciated this given the MRI is very expensive with high deductible health plan. I wanted to have the tests to rule out any serious conditions which they did. I stopped hydroxychloroquine on my own after reviewing all the data I collected. Many months after COVID and stopping hydroxy my numbness, weakness are gone and RA is not worse. Never will know if COVID or hydroxy was the cause.

I saw Dr. Bluth for a preliminary exam in late May 2021. He scheduled an MRI which I had a week later. I was to call his assistant, Edie to make another appointment with him once the MRI results came in. Edie was wonderful. I had to call a few times because the results were delayed in reaching her office. She was sympathetic and extremely helpful. She called the company that did the MRI and had them fax over the results. Then SHE called ME and set up my appointment with Dr. Bluth. I recommend Dr. Bluth for his interest, sympathy and sense of humor. He is caring and very thorough.

My evaluation is more about poor phone service than actual experience with Doctor Bluth. I am in my mid-70s and have never encountered a doctors' practice that provides poorer phone service than Hartford Neurology. It's very difficult getting to reach anyone live. More frequently than not I wound up in voicemail prison. My sense was that the practice is structured so that each doctor and his or her assistant operate in a little fiefdom. By comparison, my PCP's office answers the phone live almost all the time and everyone pitches in to give patients the best possible service. My experience with Doctor Bluth was satisfactory. He was very responsive by email. However, I yearn for the days when a doctor or someone else from the practice calls back. Neurological issues can be scary. Sometimes there is no substitute for a real-time conversation even when a 1 or 2 day wait is needed.

Dr. Bluth let me down. I began seeing him in 2009 when I began having nerve issues. He could not determine the issue. I had spine surgery in 2015. I then went from mild to chronic radiculopathy. He would always brush it off by saying “I had a pinched nerve in my neck, without explaining the emg or telling me what to do about it. I kept on going back as the symptoms grew worse. I had close to 9 emg’s with him. He basically said, he didn’t need to see me anymore and go to pain management. Now, a year later, I have progressive muscle wasting and am losing the use of my hands. I am told I have nerve damage. This should have been taken seriously by him years ago.

I'm so glad I went to Dr. Bluth, who discovered I had a pinched nerve that was causing my back pain. Dr. Bluth made me (a very nervous person who has never been a fan of doctors) feel so comfortable. He tells little stories about his wife and children and it shows how devoted he is to them, and what a genuinely good man he is. Dr. Bluth listens, explains what he is doing and advises treatment, even if the treatment will be done by another doctor.

After three attempts to reschedule an appointment, I was notified that I was a "no-show" and that Dr. Bluth refused to see me. First communication, I left a voicemail at the office during working hours. Second communication, I spoke to a member of the office staff and clearly communicated I would not be able to make the appointment. She told me that I need to call a staff member in Glastonbury to reschedule, which I IMMEDIATELY did. The Glastonbury office said I needed to reschedule with the Hartford office. Subsequently, on the day of the originally scheduled appointment (and while I was out of the country without cell service), I received calls from the office inquiring about my arrival. Bottom line: miscommunication within the office staff lands me on the no-show list and patient blacklist. I hope Dr. Bluth is aware of the shortcomings of his staff because it has cost him business and potential referrals.

I was extremely nervous about the visit but Dr. Bluth put me at ease immediately. He has a a very calm, professional but warm way when interacting. He took the time to explain things and gave me as much time as I needed. I did not feel rushed . I would tell anyone who needed to see a neurologist to make an appointment with Dr. Bluth.
