Dr. Kent Shinbach, MD

I know Dr. Shinbach for over 20 years. He has been helpful, caring and guided me through the toughest times in my life. He found effective medication treatments, was a supportive ear and used humor when it was needed. Dr. Shinbach was also in contact with the hospitals each time I was there. I will be forever grateful.

I've been a patient of Dr. Shinbach for a few years now. He is kind, knowledgeable, and prompt. He has been seeing patients through telehealth since Covid, but still holds accommodating office hours, returns calls promptly, and I am forever thankful for his care. I have referred friends to him and even though it is difficult to get an appointment with him immediately, they were able to get appointments and have been very pleased with his care. I think he is really booked because he is one of the few great psychiatrists in NYC who accept a wide range of insurances, and his rates are not abusive.

This provider closed his nice NYC office for the indefinite future but could be back at some point. He prescribed meds but didn't do psychotherapy. Even suggested I consider it. I was surprised to see he claimed it as a service provided. His company that handles claims shared this with me. He did not accept what Medicare approved, but he did accept lots of other plans. When he learned that I learned what he was doing, he couldn't face me to even discuss my feelings. A psychiatrist by training, it is discouraging that he does not consider a patient's feelings. When a patient repeats what his secretary tells a patient about his practices, he blames the patient. He was well-qualified to forward scripts to pharmacies. Wasn't too familiar w/different classes of medication & prescribed meds with serious side effects not indicated for the purpose such as anti-psychotics for sleep which cause tardive dyskinesia - and didn't induce sleep for me. I offered an article on it; he wasn't interested.

I've been a patient of Dr. Shinbach's for 1.5 years now, strictly telehealth due to COVID-19. I was worried that not being in person would affect my care - especially transferring from another doc - that is not the case here. Dr. Shinbach is truly a gem of an "old school" trained doc with "new school" mentality of working with the patient to find what works for them. He clearly practices because he is passionate about the field, and it shows. I've moved quite a bit so I've been managed by 4 psychiatrists throughout my life, and while I've had some lovely ones, Dr. Shinbach is a cut above the rest. Dr. Shinbach is experienced, well-read, and up to date on research in the field - he has great rationale and is extremely well-read re: medications - and considers the patient's past experiences in terms of finding the right med for them. He is both thorough and compassionate. I can't say enough good things about his expertise.

An excellent doctor.

Dr. Shinbach is an excellent pyschopharmacologist. He will help you get whatever you need in way of medications under control and your job as a patient is to be completely forthcoming with all of your problems. I find that recognizing I do not do well on some meds and deciding that early on I need to make changes is key. He is an excellent listener and will do what he can to alleviate your symptoms.
