Kind & Empathetic Provider
I recently saw Dr. Thomas for a follow up mammogram & ultrasound. I only spent about 10 minutes with her, but the impression she left will stay with me. She was so kind and thoughtful, making sure I understood what was happening with my breast health, while also caring about and relating to me as a whole human and not just a boob on the screen. She seems like a genuinely wonderful person and a highly competent doctor.

My complaint against this doctor is imperative that people see. I am a breast cancer survivor. I wanted to get an MRI with contrast of my breast area done to make sure everything was ok bc I’ve been experiencing pain and lumps around the area where I have had cancer prior as well as other various issues. I had anxiety during my exam and so did not get to finish the contrast part of the MRI. I was confident I could do this test again. I went to reschedule and to my surprise they were saying, oh no you don’t need it bc nothing showed up on the non contrast part and we only do contrast if we see suspicious things. That is an incorrect statement. The cancer society urges contrast to properly diagnose any suspicious enhancements that will not be seen via non contrast MRI. Hence MRI without contrast will indeed show masses but not show enhancement that could also be new cancer growths or lesion. I’m deeply hurt by this doctor and them blocking me from a test that I had approved by insurance. I hope that other people are aware and educate themselves on the use of contrast during MRI. Please see a different doctor or get another set of eyes on your imaging. Being denied answers by a doctor when you are scared for your health is the most unprofessional experience. I’m flabbergasted by this experience- all I wanted to was to do my test in completion.

Dr. Kari Thomas is excellent. She is very thorough and meticulous in reviewing mammograms. She saved my life when she wanted to double check something she saw on my pictures. She immediately requested me to come in for a biopsy and it confirmed to be stage 1 breast cancer in 2016. Since then, I have requested her to review every follow up since my cancer surgery. I highly recommend her to all women in Portland to seek her expertise. Her bedside manner is impeccable, along w/her listening ears!
