Dr. Joseph Schaffer, MD

For a year Dr. Schaffer failed to diagnose that cause of my urinary retention was the low dose "safe" anti-depressant I had been prescribed by my earlier internist and gynecologist for hot flashes and sleeplessness . He ran every invasive test available and then had me unnecessarily self-cathing for a year with recurrent UTI's and rounds of anti-biotics. His empathetic, bright and curious nurse practitioner finally diagnosed the drug side effect. I discontinued the drug and all symptoms disappeared overnight. Dr. Shaffer never acknowledged or apologized.

A complete referral scam. Will not provide any care.

While extremely intelligent, he does not seem to care about the emotional side of medicine. He did a procedure that was excruciatingly painful & lacked basic compassion. After I sent them a complaint, no reply was sent. In other instances he was unconcerned with issues if test results did not support the complaint.

Dr Schaffer is THE real deal. He listens, he muses over this and that and then makes a plan. He gave us his cell number while I was hospitalized... I think the whole program he has running at UTSouthwestern is a well oiled machine, I have rarely waited 20 minutes. His bedside and office manner is wonderful. If you have issues, this is your doctor ?????.

I cannot say enough about this great doctor and man! Dr. Joseph Schaffer literally gave me my life back. Doctor Schaffer repaired my recto-vaginal fistula, something another doctor could not do. The bedside manner of Doc S is amazing. He does not rush through appointments - gives you his complete and undivided attention. And can I go on and on about how much this man takes care of you post-surgery as well? He is there for you, day and night. This man really cares about you as a patient.

I chose to go to Dr Schaffer to have my rectovaginal fistula repaired after hearing from other women who had successful surgeries by him. This is a difficult surgery that very few doctors are able to do. He was very caring all the way through and my surgery was successful. Came to check on me at the hospital during his vacation. Followed up afterwards by text and email. Highly recommended.

I traveled from San Antonio to see Dr. S after having 2 previous failed surgeries to correct damage done after childbirth. He was absolutely incredible, and was able to repair me with one surgery. Do yourself a favor and go see him!

Dr Schaffer was able to surgically repair a quite rare and embarrassing condition. He is caring. Even gave me his cell phone number to contact him after the procedure. I just love him and what he did for me. I know of a few other women with this condition, and he has repaired them as well. To us, he is like a miracle worker. He gave us our lives back, and for that, we will always be grateful. Im stunned at the other reviews. I have nothing but good things to say about him.

Not good. He forgot a surgical clip on my lower left pelvic area. He gave me a hip to hip Hysterectomy. He has showed no interest in my health after this surgery he preformed and stated that my pain I have had since day one after surgery is not being caused by this malpractice he did on Sept/2015. In fact I think I was used as a guinea pig by him. This has affected me health wise and personal life.
