Dr. Jonathan Velez Rivera, MD

Excellent experience with Dr Velez and his virtual staff. He literally spent 50 minutes during our initial encounter conversing about my situation -- nonjudgemental, professional. He was in no rush at all! I have been seeing him for 1.5 years now.

I enjoy my visits with Dr V. He is easy-going, knowledgeable, and takes his time with me. He emits positive energy which is important for me. Very punctual on the majority of our visits. If my visit is at 3:00pm via video, he is seeing me at 2:55pm! His staff in the office on the other hand may be a bit slower, but still faster than my other docs. He has my full 100% recommendation.

I have seen Dr Velez for almost 2 years now due to hypothyroidism after pregnancy. He has been attentive to my needs and always makes me feel welcomed. I get bloodwork done every 6 months or so, but if I need to get them done sooner he is always responsive and willing to meet via televideo to test and discuss further. I usually send him a list of questions by message, and he is ready to discuss during appointment. No major complaints with the telehealth and clinic staff. I would recommend him and his team to anyone!

I've had type 1 diabetes my whole life. Encountered plenty of endos out there who treat me like another diabetic who is doing things wrong. Dr. V on the other hand has been like no other!! We've been working together for almost 2 years now. Super empathic, nice, jovial, knowledgeable, and able to relate to my experience considering that he also has Type 1!! Zero judgements from his end. We do visits in person and telehealth, which is even more convenient. Staff is nice. Clinics are nice. He is usually on time. I hope he does not leave Duke any time soon.

I saw him 3x I believe. Each time I left there feeling gross about the appointment. He talked down to me and would not hear me. He attributed my problems to the aging process during each appointment. My bloodwork did not agree with that. He referred me to a surgeon to placate me and said to me 'I don't even know if they will see you,' when I asked if I should call them or wait for a call from them. He said also something offensive to me that I won't put here. I was referred to another doctor and a simple blood test showed that I had a condition that could be surgically treated easily and successfully. This condition affected my quality of life horribly for years and I told him that, yet he was dismissive of my symptoms. I love the Duke Health system however, this doctor needs some retraining on the focus of his work. I thank God that I was referred to a different doctor who HEARD me, rather than just stand there and 'listen' like he did. Surgery was necessary and a success.
