Dr. Mahr scoped my knee and I ended up with a septic infection that he blamed on me every visit until I left. Still recovering two years later under the care of a great surgeon at Wake Forest. Thank God I did not listen to Dr. Maher’s plan for a manipulation that would have left my leg fractured in pieces. He was not compassionate, professional or knowledgeable and I do not recommend him even for a simple scope. Avoid Carilion and Carilion Orthopedics.

I had a serious, significant shoulder injury. Dr. Maher had been recommended to me by several people. I'm from Washington, DC and used to top-notch medical services. Dr. Maher and his team did not disappoint. Dr. Maher takes the time to fully understand what the problem is, and I don't find him to be a surgeon who is quick to diagnose and rush to surgery--he presents options. In my case, surgery was inevitable. He is highly skilled in arthroscopic surgery. Amazing what he was able to do without slicing my shoulder open. I had my other shoulder operated on many years ago. He told me it would take 2 years to heal...and he was right. He doesn't give false promises and is fully committed to his patient. I can say that after 2-1/2 years my shoulder is better than ever. Because this is a very popular orthopedic practice, sometimes appointments can be a little delayed with emergencies, etc.--understandable. To me, though, it is worth the wait for the PREMIUM treatment and service.

He was very nice and I would highly recommend him .He explained everything about your diagnosis very thoroughly too . Wonderful bedside manners and it was my first visit to an orthopedic doctor too. I saw Dr. Maher for a meniscus tear in my knee. He was the only ortho I saw (out of 3) who really talked through my options with me and didn't push surgery on me. He was willing to treat me either way, and I ultimately came back to him for surgery - and am glad I did! He was great about explaining everything & my surgery could not have gone smoother. I was walking normally within a few days & my swelling went down very fast!

I've had two issues that Dr. Maher was able to take care of. First was my left knee, the second was my left shoulder. Both instances I required surgery. During the entirety of both cases I was made perfectly aware of my choices and courses of action. Dr. Maher was very patient and informative. He was able to answer my questions in such a way that I understood. He always informed me of the pros and cons of each path. His staff, at both locations is also top notch.

My 13 year old son hurt his leg, and we were referred to Dr. Maher. About 2 months later, we were there with my son having a broken arm. Dr. Maher is always very friendly, takes the time to explain everything to us. When my son got his cast put on, Dr. Maher kept asking my son if everything was comfortable, and made sure that we knew how to care for the cast, and made us feel very comfortable. we will be returning to have the cast removed, and feel confident that all will be back to normal.
