This entire practice is truly outstanding. Dr. Kern and the nurse practitioner I saw first were knowledgeable, thorough, and pleasant.

I liked Dr Kern as soon as he walked into the room. He's kind, humorous, brilliant, and comforting. I'm glad my heart surgery will be (literally!) in his hands.

Dr. Kern helped save my life 20 years ago with an emergency vein graft and brachial artery repair. He also graciously took my call in the middle of the night when I was worried about post-op issue. He’s a great doctor and I cannot recommend him enough.

I was abandoned by Dr. Kern following emergency bypass surgery for a birth defect that he performed on me. When I developed signs of an inguinal artery aneurysm picked up by my gastroenterologist, who was the department chief. Dr. Kern refused to bring me in as an emergency appointment stating I had to use UVA Gastroenterology before he would ever see me again. Due to my rare vascular defect, hardly anyone knows how to properly surgically repair it. I was fortunate enough to find a different doctor in a different state who had also performed this surgery. He properly repaired my rare vascular condition, but never provided any follow-up care, getting mad at me when I ended up with complications resulting in three bowel obstructions, two of which required hospitalization. Abandonment is a serious safety problem and is malpractice. This is incredibly dangerous! Shockingly was this never addressed when my family filed a complaint against him to University of Virginia. I would avoid him

In September 2017 I needed emergency bypass surgery. I was referred to Dr. John Kern and within two days I was scheduled for the surgery. Dr. Kern has been the very best physician with whom I have dealt for anything. He listens, he is kind, and most importantly he knows what he is doing and he does it extraordinarily well. If I need further heart surgery (although Dr. Kern says my heart is good for the next 70 years) there is no one I would trust to work with other that Dr. John Kern.

Best cardiac surgeon ever!! Dr. Kern is very concerned about his patients. He has so much compassion and carrying for everyone. I am so glad that I was referred to him for my open heart surgery. The incision healed quickly and without any problems. I would recommend him... he truly cares and does an excellent job. Thank you, Dr. Kern, for for taking such great care of me.
