Deplorable
Dr. Phelps was extremely unprofessional. One of my good friends had surgery with him, and now as a result has irreparable damage. His bedside manner was appalling. Do not see him or let your loved ones see him.

Excellent Visit
Dr. Phelps took the time to look at my MRI report and went over every detail of my lower back issues. He also gave me the confidence I needed to know that he could perform the proper surgery to resolve my back issues. I fully trust this surgeon and his ability to do his job well. I highly recommend him as a surgeon who knows his skills well.

Initial consult - Patient w/ questions and kind!
Dr. Phelps took the time to answer our many questions during our initial consultation regarding surgery. This review is only related to the initial consult. We never felt rushed, despite having many complex questions and taking a lot of his time. His staff was kind and informative as well. It was SO important to have our surgeon care enough to listen and not feel rushed. Thanks Doc!

Bad experience overall
I sat in the exam room for 1.45 hours then walked out without ever seeing Dr. Phelps. Two different times I was told by staff he would arrive in 5 minutes. I work in the medical field and understand running late, but this was inexcusable.

Met with Dr Phelps for the first time about back pain. He did a very through review of my symptoms, conducted a detailed review of all the MRIs explaining what they showed and made a very good analysis planning a course of treatment

I am pain free!
After 4.5 months of continuous sciatica pain, and trying other types of treatments (3 epidural steroid shots, chiropractor, physiotherapy), I finally decided to go for the back surgery (discectomy). Dr. Phelps did the surgery which is considered minimally invasive (I would say the cut in my back is approximately 5 cm long). Very minor discomfort in the incision area in the first two weeks, but no pain. I did not need to use any of the pain medication that was prescribed to me (hydrocodone) even once. I am now one month after the surgery and walking pain free (but I need to keep some post-op restriction for two more months like not bending or lifting too much). Thank you Dr. Phelps! One little gripe is that I did not see Dr. Phelps until the day of the operation. I only met with his physician assistant twice. Meeting with the actual surgeon would have helped to allay some of my pre-op anxiety. However, the results are what matters!

Dr. Phelps had an extremely busy clinic but he took the time to explain the MRI results to me. He also answered many questions and gave an overview of my situation. Given his schedule I was very impressed with his willingness to help me understand fully my situation and also what to expect in the future. What a blessing he is!

My mother was seen in the ER and never saw this man. The scheduler called after she was released to her an MRI. He was the dr assigned to her somehow. He refused to give her calming meds to do an MRI. She is 75 and had a stroke 3 months ago. He said to call her primary so we did. They said because he put the order in, he had to order the calming meds. He refused 4 times. His nurse said they have had issues with him on this and Baptist admin said they have had issues with people reporting to them on this. I would highly encourage you to find another dr. He is too worried about liability to treat. My opinion is he is negligent in caring for the patient completely if he refuses to to help them complete a test. I complained to Baptist and I believe they will probably do nothing. They need to disassociate with him if he is bringing negative feedback to them. Although he never met her nor did surgery one her, he ordered a test and refused to help her complete that process.

Spends adequate time with patients to discuss symptoms and to understand the problem from the patient's perspective. He goes over imaging results and explains how symptoms are related to imaging findings and encourages patients to ask questions. He also provides excellent and thorough descriptions of options most likely to be effective for alleviation of symptoms. I would definitely recommend Dr. Phelps.

I need to give more information about the post I left below regarding my father. Dr Phelps care for my dad -started with ER visit after a fall My dad sustained fractures in the area of the C1/C2 cervical vertebrae. Dr Phelps on call, saw my dad in ER; determined surgery not needed as his C1/C2 had fused over his life. Dr Phelps had him put in a hard cervical collar (so uncomfortable- but he needed it ). Dr said he would follow in 2 weeks. 12 days later he wrote a letter saying he would not follow my dad's care, 30 days past date of the letter. However he refused all requests for appointments in that 30 days. We have no idea of my dad's healing status, when the hard brace can come off, ?complications of unnecessary prolonged use of brace. My 96 y/o mother, married to my dad for 77 years is in tears. I was an RN in another area of specialty. I don't know what to do. I am in tears, can't sleep. My dad is miserable. We are "lost". This goes w/ complaint below.

terrible; totally uncaring for 98 year old WWII Veteran from the Greatest Generation. If you don't need surgery, and you are elderly, don't expect Dr Phelps to care for you. "0" stars if it was an option. My dad is miserable and we have no options for follow up within the time period recommended. Dr Phelps appears to be overcome with having a good outcome, and is without compassion for the elderly when outcomes are unknown. Truly my dad is a pretty health 98 year old WWII veteran, Ambulatory with a walker, lives independently with my mom of 77 years, with assistance of caregivers. Eats at the dinner table every night, Happy to go on a car ride. Loves spending time with his family. Watches a lot of westerns on TV We all love him very much. Dr Phelps obviously has no respect to do his best to provide quality of life for the elderly - including those who fought in the War of Wars - WWII and secured our freedom. Everyone deserves good care, my dad especially.
