Dr. Jean Marie Houghton, MD

I am very happy to have Dr. Houghton as part of my medical team. She has a terrific bedside manner. She explains everything to me in simple language so that I understand everything. She listens carefully to all of my questions. She is very positive and professional. If there is anything that needs to be discussed, she always does it herself in person or by a phone call. She is extremely good at what she does. I recommend her frequently to friends.

I am not sure about all these other reviews on here. I thought Dr. Houghton was very nice to talk with. She listened to all of my symptoms and explained everything she was thinking thoroughly. I am not sure what more you want from a doctor. Definitely think twice before you use these reviews to pick a doctor. She has 2.6 stars but is easily 4+ based on doctors ive had.

Doctor didn't listen. She talked over me. I had most of my visit with a student. Where I was told there were medicines to help with the pain but I was too old. I was told I'd just have to live with the pain. She said she sent a prescription to my pharmacy but didn't tell me what it was. She had attitude and said I didn't seemed to like what she was say I could get a 2nd option. Most of this with the student but when Dr Houghton came in she said i agree 100% WHAT you WERE told. Both of them had attitude. They were of no help. Umass need to teach ther doctors compassion.

I will say, before my procedures, I read these reviews and was a bit concerned about seeing Dr. Houghton. However, all of the negative reviews were about "attitude" not her skills as a doctor. I wasn't going in for my upper endoscopy and colonoscopy to make friends. I was going because I had some problems that needed to be addressed. With that said, upon arrival at the 21 Eastern Ave. location, from the intake in the reception area to discharge, I was treated very well. Everyone was kind an

500 characters is not nearly enough to express my awful experience. Dr. Houghton did not take my issues seriously whatsoever. She dismissed everything I said and did ZERO tests on me. I told her that I’m consistently bloated and feel bad all the time. Her response was “yeah that’s not bloating - maybe you should lose 3-4 lbs and if that doesn’t work you could get liposuction. I was floored by her responses and left the office in tears. She has NO bedside manners and is down right rude.

I am told by my Primary Care Physician that the awful diarrhea and constipation I have experienced since the first part of May could be - and I emphasize that it could've been - so I cannot say all of that was a result of the colonoscopy I had with Ms. Houghton but she has yet to return another phone call where I did share the theory my PCP has yet she does have 28 years of experience so it was not because she was not gentle. You will have to weigh your options and do the math.
