I saw Dr. Ficke for a second opinion after my regular podiatrist recommended surgery for a torn tendon and dislocation of my 2nd metatarsal, and fixing the 3rd metatarsal before it also snapped (2nd/3rd metatarsal shortening (Weil) osteotomies with plantar plate repair). However, my regular podiatrist was hesitant to recommend repair of the large bunion I had on the same foot since it had not been causing any pain. When I saw Dr. Ficke, he agreed with the 2nd/3rd metatarsal repair, but was fairly adamant that I should also have the bunion repaired - “It would be risky not to treat the severe hallux valgus in this context as it is likely partially involved in the increased forces through the 2nd metatarsal”. In other words, if I did not have the bunion repaired, (Osteotomy, Metatarsal Bone ), there was a chance that I would experience another issue with the 2nd metatarsal at some future date. I felt very comfortable with Dr. Ficke’s explanation of the reason for the bunion repair and t

Surgical procedures for great toe arthritis
Dr. Ficke was outstanding. He provided me a very clear concise discussion on surgical procedures for end stage great toe arthritis. He took time to explain in detail the surgical options, the recovery times and the future impacts on my mobility and then took considerable additional time to make sure it was clear to me and that I understood all the issues. I felt very comfortable with his explanation and expertise to perform the complex surgery to solve my particular problem.

Fine surgeon, however his people skills and follow up skills on complicated medical conditions are horrible. He lacks bedside manor and tact. If you're dealing with something unique, rare or complicated, I would choose elsewhere, and not Hopkins.

Excellent experience. Appointment staff , Front desk staff, nurses, medical students and residents were kins, professional, informative. Dr. Ficke had reviewed my records before I saw him.
