Dr. Hiruy Gessesse, MD

I have bipolar disorder. That means that when I wasnt on medication yet, I’d feel suicidal about once a week, but mostly normal. I felt suicidal about four days before a doctor appointment where they asked me if I’m suicidal. I was honest and said no, but that I was suicidal a few days earlier. I got put on a psych hold at Del Amo because of that. The first day I was there, Dr. Gessessee met with me. I told him my story, and he told me that I’d go home that night and asked if I had family that could pick me up. I said yes, and called my parents to tell them that they would be picking me up son from the hospital. They never got a phone call from Dr. Gessessee. In fact, four days after not seeing him because he was avoiding me, my nurse practitioner of psychiatry told me that he extended my hold to up to TWO weeks. He’s a liar

I was taken here involuntarily. I dont think he should be called a dr. but he was my “doctor”…. By law he’s required to see his patients for between 20 to 30 mins before prescribing them with something like a mood stabilizer. SOMETHING REAL DOCTORS WITH REAL CARE WILL DO. In my entire 6 days there, I didn’t even see him for a total of 15 mins!!! After glancing at me for 45 seconds AND ME SPECIFYING i wanted a natural solution first his response was essentially “well too bad you can’t leave here until you take the medication”. Then he tried to start me out on a 50mg dose of a mood stabilizer when i have never taken any mood stabilizer in my life (I refused every time and went home never taking it you have every right to refuse whatever drugs this “dr” prescribes) and now that I’m finally home I find out 50mg for someone who has never taken it is an INSANELY HIGH dosage. IT WOULD HAVE MESSED ME UP BADLY!!! KEPY ME THERE ALL 14 DAYS LIKE HE WNATS. DO NOT EVER VOLUNTARILY GO TO HIM!

He subbed in for another psychiatrist at the College Hospital in Cerritos and unjustly extended my hold after less than a 2 minute conversation. He did not ask any questions to properly assess me and deemed me a danger to myself and severely disabled. He had no grounds for that decision and simply wanted to keep me there so they could continue to bill my insurance/the government. He has no compassion, no qualifications for this job. He should have his license revoked and never be able to see patients again.

My daughter was at Del Amo facility and Dr G was extremely inattentive, non-listening, assumptive, and impatient. He provided no substantial help whatsoever and was satisfied spending as minimal time as possible with his patients, including my daughter. He simply just goes through the motions. We were so dissatisfied with his “services” that we immediately requested a second opinion for our daughters care. My fear is that his behaviors will not change and he will continue providing extremely poor mental health services to future patients who have the misfortune of being in his care. I would give him -5 stars if that were possible.

This man will lie about your health, beware. He will give you an incorrect diagnosis and medicate you to a point you no longer function. This has happened to friends of mine.

Abysmal level of mediocrity. My daughter was admitted at the Del Amo Behavioral Facility in Torrance because she wanted to take her own life. At no point in time, did Dr. Hiruy Gessesse called me or her mother to inquire about my daughter's medical history. All I got was a phone call from a nurse practitioner asking for my consent to give drugs to my child. I called daily to ask for the input from social worker on staff and left multiple voice-mails. I asked nurses to leave messages with my questions in my daughter's file for the doctor. I would call back the following day and the nurse I spoke would tell me that there was no message. Do not put your loved ones in the care of Dr Gessesse.

I had the misfortune of being Dr. G's patient in 2014 and also for the last 4 days. I was telling Dr. G that I was doing well and was ready to be discharged from the psychiatric hospital. As I was talking, Dr. G was opening the door and leaving the room. Horrible doctor. Terrible doctor. Awful doctor. Dr. G is not willing to listen to what patients have to say.

Awful excuse of a doctor.

Sees patients as jobs and shows no real concern or understanding. Never available and when you finally do meet, it feels rushed.
