The Tuesday morning I was going up top deer hunting when my fitbit charge showed me my resting beats per minute were around 100 instead of 62 to 65. I took a drive to Cheshire Medical to get checked out and they told me I was going no where, I was having a heart attack. The weather was bad for flying so I went to Dartmouth Hitchcock in Lebanon, NH by ambulance (Cheshire EMS) and had a cardiac catheter which showed one of 3 areas was not a good candidate for a stent. I now was in the care of Dr. Henry Tannous and his team and got a triple bypass the day after Thanksgiving. These people saved my life... I am forever indebted and grateful to Dr. Henry Tannous and his team!! Four days later I was on my way home. All the people that took care of me were wonderful!!!!

life saving surgery
Dr. Tannous was thorough in finding additional problems before an initial procedure of a sternotomy with a vascular surgeon doing a by pass. In the additional pre surgery he wanted a Cathrization to see if there were any other problems. This led to the identification of blockages in several arteries on my heart. If these weren't discovered and addressed thoroughly by Dr. Tannous's expertise, I probably would have died soon of a heart attack. It was a six hour surgery for both surgeries to be performed, vascular and cardio-thoracic. Dr Tannous was a caring man, and experienced and followed my hospital recovery and my 6 week check up. I f needed I would head straight back to Dr. Tannous. He is professional, experienced, skilled, kind and compassionates.

Extremely skillful and compassionate surgeon
Dr Tannous performed an 8 hour life-saving surgery on my husband. His skill was remarkable. Equally important was his ability to communicate clearly with both my husband, the patient, and me, the panicked wife about what was happening at each stage of the surgery and then recovery. Throughout it all, he showed real compassion and understanding. We will be forever grateful for his excellent work in performing a high-risk (but high reward) cardio-thoracic surgery.

Do NOT use this doctor
This doctor LIED to me, by telling me that if I did not have the heart surgery that he wanted to do on me...that I would be DEAD in 2 months!!! Well, that was 2 years ago...and I'm still alive and doing fine! He tried to SCARE me into having open heart surgery, told me that I had 2 leaking heart valves (which I do) but the day before the scheduled surgery, he told me that he was only going to repair 1 of the 2 valves...because the aortic valve was too hard to get to!!! I canceled the surgery with him and I never went back.

Amazing Surgeon
We would definitely leave more than five stars for Dr Tannous. An outstanding surgeon and gentleman. From the very beginning Dr Tannous explained everything about the surgery and recovery to us in a simple and concise manner that put us immediately at ease. He treated my husband and I with the utmost care and respect. Working alongside Dr Tannous are a dedicated team of professionals. From the receptionist at the heart center who would greet us with a smile, humor and care to the nurses on the 7th floor who shared their love of their profession with humor, respect and dignity. A special thanks also goes out to nurse Laurie O’Sullivan who went above and beyond to keep us informed of every step of the way before, during and after surgery with care and gentle kindness. This experience will not be forgotten and we are beyond grateful to them all.

Skilled Surgeon / Patient Centered
My husband was diagnosed with an anterior mediastinal mass and small lung lesion just weeks before our son’s wedding. We were very scared. From our first encounter in the Heart Institute with support staff to nursing, technicians, anesthesiologist and Dr. Tannous, our experience reflected this team’s deep understanding of person-centered care. We felt seen, heard and respected. My husband’s surgery was successful and his recovery was virtually pain-free; no pain relievers required! And while certainly his positive attitude, possible high pain tolerance and myriad surgical variables of which we know nothing - all likely contributed to his easy recovery - we are sure that Dr. Tannous’ surgical skill is the main reason! In addition, he is a connected and genuinely caring human being, clearly as thrilled with the outcome as we were. Dr. Tannous promised, “You’ll be dancing at your son’s wedding.” And he was right.

Amazing Surgeon and Man
If I could leave more than 5 stars I would. My husband needed what ended up being quadruple bypass surgery as well as a maze procedure and a third procedure for Afib. Dr. Tannous is a highly skilled physician who saved my husband's life. He clearly explained everything to us and made sure we understood everything both before and after the surgery. He is confident, but humble, and extremely kind and caring. He was patient as he listened to all of our questions and concerns and really made us feel important, not just another patient. In addition, his whole team of NPs are wonderful people, always there and never rushed. The nurses on the 7th floor took great care of my husband too and made being in the hospital the best it could be. I cannot recommend them enough!

Amazing Surgeon and Doctor
Dr. Tannous is a highly skilled, gifted surgeon and excellent doctor. He is consistently on top of his game. He spends time with you, explains everything, follows up personally with you after surgery and ensures the desired outcome. There are many surgeons but only one Dr. Tannous. I trusted him with my life. Twice. And if I ever needed surgery again, I would insist on his care. He is surrounded by excellent Physicians Assistants, top notch nurses and Nurse Practitioners, and other highly skilled doctors all to provide exceptional care.

Outstanding!
My husband had a triple bypass done by Dr. Tannous at Stony Brook Hospital. I can notq say enough about how wonderful the whole process was. It was a very serious surgery but the minute we met Dr Tannous, we felt confident and very comfortable throughout the ordeal. Besides his being a wonderful surgeon, his staff is a first class operation. His nurse practioner and nurses were exceptional. The day of surgery I received phone calls throughout the surgery from the nurse navigator updating me every other hour until the surgery was over. The nurses in the cardiac icu and intermediate care on 7 West were absolute angels. I have not one complaint about these great people, including the receptionist and the scheduler. Everyone associated with Dr. Tannous and the Heart Institute were remarkable people. Thank you all!

I have not been well for the past several years and searching for the Dr. to help solve my problem of feeling weak and tired with shortness of breath and general malaise. Finally found Dr. Tannous who actually saved my life. After several tests, his team determined that I needed a TAVR(trans catheter aortic valve replacement). I had the procedure and was discharged from the hospital the next day. I began feeling better almost immediately, and continue to feel better each day. Today was my one month check and I feel great. I would recommend Dr.Henry Tannous and his team to the entire world. Privileged to have found him and his caring staff.

Just been released from open heart surgery performed by Dr. Tannous. Not only would I highly recommend Dr. Tannous to my family or friends but also recommend Stony Brook Hospital. During this difficult time of Covid, the nurses and doctors kept my family informed of my condition during surgery and while I was in ICU. I am so grateful to the nurses on the 7th floor for their professional care and concern for my progress during my stay. To all the doctors, and their staff, who were instrumental in my procedures including Dr. Vlay, Dr. Lawson and Dr. Kumar, I am truly grateful for their care and concern.

Dr. Tannous was an amazing, friendly, compassionate, and most of all experienced and proficient surgeon. He explained all my medical needs and never pushed me into any decision. I felt extremely comfortable with him. He performed a surgical biopsy on my lung which kept me in the hospital for 4 days on a chest tube to remove some pleural effusion and whatever else needed removal. All my biopsies came back good. My healing was quite quick. My incisions healed very quickly and all other post surgery healing was pretty quick as well. I am 100% now! I would recommend Dr. Tannous to everyone !

What can I say he saved my life! Faced with Open Heart surgery and having worked clinically in open heart in my past I knew what I was in for. Dr Tannous was recommended and my surgery was flawless. I’m 4 weeks out and could not be doing better. He’s technically one of the best and communicates clearly every step of the way. Very impressed with the entire team at Stony Brook!
