Rude and Late
I really like my therapist at KH clinic and trusted her recommendation despite these bad reviews. The day of my appointment I was told to wait by the phone starting at 12pm when my appointment was at 12:30. I've never had that happen with any doctor. Then he was 10 minutes late. He asked me if the purpose of the appointment was meds. I said, uh yeah I have a therapist through KH. He said he's with KH. I said I know. He needs to retire he probably has dementia and he's hurting people because of it.

Dismissive, unprofessional demeanor.
I found him presumptuous and impolite. He asked irrelevant questions, and made unnecessary comments, as though we were in a social, rather than therapeutic, conversation. When I described an experience I had with the meds, he said I was contradicting what I had said the session beforehand (implying I was not being honest.) This felt so disrespectful and insulting - aren't I allowed to express a change in how the meds are affecting me, without being implicitly accused of changing my story? I would have thought he would have welcomed my honesty, but I felt completely shut down. Would not return to him.

I had a consultation with Dr. Paul when my wonderful therapist from the KH clinic recommended I consider some kind of psychiatric care to help with what at the time was debilitating depression. I found him not just brusque and dismissive, but arrogant, and even worse, really simplistic about the complexity of factors that can lead to depression. I asked what I could do to educate myself and he said "don't do that--I'm the only resource you need." OK. I asked about non-pharmacological approaches to treating depression and he said "well why are you talking to me, then? I'm the meds guy." OK. His manner and his philosophy made it immediately clear he was not the doctor for me. But if you want a "meds guy" who tells you what to do and practices like it's the 1980's or 90's, he might be it. I still see my KH therapist though, and I had success with other nontraditional treatments. I do recommend the Horney Clinic for psychotherapy.

I agree with the above negative reviews. Terrible bedside manner. Didn't see me enough as a bipolar (type 2) patient who can have mixed states that affect my ability to function in the world with chronic pain. Scoffed at me when I told him about a rheumatological diagnosis, then said he used to be a rheumatologist! If so, why the scoffing, and not more psychiatry? A mean, spiteful, incompetent charlatan on a high pedestal who thinks he can get away with anything; sadly he can—as far as I know he's been reported up the yin-yang and still lounges on his haughty perch). I ended up in the hospital THREE TIMES under his care before I realized it wasn't worth seeing the great therapist I had, to threaten my own life with Dr Paul's negligence anymore. A shame: there are great clinicians under his dictatorship of the KH Clinic. If you have serious mental health issues needing frequent, knowledgeable attention, steer well clear of this doctor; he will fail you again and again.

My experience with Dr Paul deteriorated quickly. I initially found him brusque and abrupt. He said I had to come off what was for me a miracle drug due to something on my EKG. My physician saw nothing wrong with my EKG, and Dr Paul refused to explain to me why his view was so divergent as to pull me off a drug entirely. Not to mention, while I adjusted to the lower dose, I was weepy and emotional for approximately two days--a common experience for me on this drug. Dr Paul, however, dismissed the connection entirely, saying I had to be upset because of something else--despite that I was at a good period in my life. As a woman, his attitude smacked more than a little of sexism. I am glad other people have had positive experience with Dr Paul, but I am glad to be out of his care.

I wish I had never gone to see Dr. Paul. He interrupted me constantly to tell personal anecdotes. He became condescending and demeaning when I tried to explain why his behavior made me uncomfortable. He is charming at first. But, with time it becomes clear that he is incapable. I wish that wasn't so but that's how it was for me.

Dr. Paul was the kindest, most engaging practitioner I've had in decades. Under His care, He and his staff were very attentive, responding to my various phone calls and messages.. I feel privileged to have been His patient. I never felt Him to be condescending towards me. I owe my sanity to Dr. Paul and his staff . I have nothing but my deepest respect and admiration for him, and find it baffling to see people who have negative words about Him. Such negativity is a reflection on them, not Him

The reason for the review here is that Dr. Harvey Paul states on this site is that he is open to any and all constructive criticism personally, so I tried that, and was met with ridicule and hostility. It is bad enough that anyone would respond to a person's constructive concerns, but in the role and job that he has, treating a client with ridicule and hostility, as well as a good amount of disdain, condescending attitude, and basically using the words You'r wrong can be lethal. Literally.

Seriously negative experience. Bedside manner is lacking. Does not listen. Prescribed incorrectly. I find this doctor to be not only lacking in skill, but has serious setbacks within his role as a psychiatrist.
