This review is long overdue.
I had a major quad tendon tear. Dr Schumacher thoroughly explained all options even though in my estimation having surgery was the only logical choice. Staff was great throughout my treatment. Schumacher was cordial and professional. He took the time to answer all my questions. The Surgery went well. The pain ball was great and it managed my pain better than expected. I was skeptical about the surgery outcome because of the way my knee looked compared to the uninjured one. I did all my physical therapy and exercised to get the strength back in my quad. After 2 years my injured knee looked and functioned very well. It still does. I don't feel that a better outcome would be possible.Dr Schumacher and his team did a fantastic job. This review is late coming because life got in the way. What with retirement, fixing and selling our house, moving out of state and general procrastination this review got put on the back burner. But I feel I owe him for a great job well done.

My first surgery ever. Doc said that he would take the best care of me, LIE! Staff did not bother to let me know that my surgery was postponed 4 hours. Staff said that the painball would take care of 80% of the pain, LIE! Doc virtually accused me of being a drug addict, without asking the anesthesiologist how many shots it took to put me under. It was 7 , over 3 times the amount it typically takes. Come to find out my body has a high tolerance to painkillers, lucky me! I swore that I would never return to his office, so I removed the stitches myself. You would do better doing surgery on yourself, then letting this guy cut on you.

Dr. Schumacher operated on my knee and shoulder (at the same time) saying he knew my pain was bicep and it would be an easy surgery. He ran no xrays or MRI images before surgery. Surgery showed I also had a significant rotator cuff tear. This made the surgery even more complicated and it was a failure. I was driven back the day after surgery for pain management but the meds could not catch up to the pain. I continued to complain about my pain and Dr. Schumacher kept saying there was nothing wrong and that the only way out was to push through. He is not at all compassionate. He doesn’t listen. He doesn’t sit still to talk with you. He literally backs out of a room while asked a question. 3 months later still in pain I asked for an MRI. He refused to order tests. Instead he jabbed me three times with steroids (when I wasn’t healed). I got my own MRI with another doctor confirming the failed surgery. My bicep was not attached and my rotator cuff still torn. A horrible experience!

Dr Schumacher is an excellent surgeon. He operated on my shoulder and knee while I was on active duty and recently, operated on a meniscus tear on my knee. I would not have anyone else do this surgery. Talented and thorough.......highly recommended.

What a bummer! I was excited to finally see a specialist about my chronic joint pain. I traveled to Anchorage for my appointment. Dr. Schumacher was running late and couldn't even see me. When I spoke with him over the phone about treatment options, he asked no questions, made many assumptions about my history/experiences, and spoke to me in a condescending tone (as if nothing was actually wrong with me). The staff were absolutely phenomenal, but I would never recommend this doctor to anyone.

He fixed my ACL (after telling repeatedly how good he is at fixing ACLs), but he's a jerk. Agree with the other 3 comments. Narrowly focused, doesn't listen to concerns, doesn't discuss your care or options--just makes statements/decisions and doesn't explain anything, even when asked. (He told me, "You're smart; Google it.") Exceedingly late to appointments. Plus his PA is bizarre and his staff is useless. Disappointing as he was highly recommended. Would not recommend.

I agree with the other Comment about the Dr. Being VERY narrow minded. I personally think he's a bully, he lacks empathy and does not want to hear your questions. He actually yelled at me with my child present in the room which was completely uncalled for. He also mentioned that at least and I quote 1 out of every 50 patients he sees ends up with a blood clot. This doctor does not care if you are in pain or worried etc.. As I said he lacks Empathy, Horrible bedside Manner. Don't see this Doc.

Concern for Others in Anchorage, AK – May 11, 2016
×Post a ResponseAre you Dr. Schumacher?
Highly recommended, great reputation as a surgeon. Seems very narrowly focused on his role in the process and gives very little information about your options, care, rehab, or recovery. Everything seems to be on a need-to-know basis, which is unfortunate when you don't know what questions to ask. His PA talks extremely fast and his nurse is a little spacey, and all three gave me different answers to the same questions, so in general it's hard to communicate with his team.
