No Empathy
Dr. Southren wrote information in my chart about opioid use that was untrue and showed he didn't take the time to read my chart before seeing me. I was asking that he find something other than an opioid because I was afraid of them. Instead, he wrote I was seeking drugs. He had no knowledge of my spinal surgeries, pain or that I had a fusion planned. He seems to be self-absorbed and more concerned about himself then his patients or how to help his patients. He would serve research better then patients. He has no bedside manner and his manner at best is blunt. I found him cruel.

It was totally disappointing; I expected to get relief from my pain - I did not get relief at all. The explanation of what injections were being used was totally not done well. I was not told that the injections were only anesthesia - lidocaine or lidocaine substitute - If I had been told that the injections were only anesthesia and not steroids, I would have declined the treatment as I would have known it would NOT work!

Dr. Southern is professional and prompt, although not openly empathetic. He exudes competence. The clinic in Radnor is run extremely well- you do not wait even one minute past your appointed time for visits or procedures. The Radnor facility is spectacular- very clean and comfortable. In all, a dignified experience. The only deficiency in my eyes is he plays games withholding pain medications, falsely thinking that makes him "cool." But Dr. Southern is miles above most of his colleagues at Penn.
