Horrible Experience Almost Died
He was my surgeon for a bariatric-hernia surgery. I had internal bleeding after the surgery that he did not catch, even though I had all the clear signs. Did another exploratory surgery found liters of blood in my abdomen. I was not able to breath on my own after the surgery, so that landed me in the ICU on a ventilator. I was in the hospital for 2 months, and once a day he would come into my room and say 'I dont know whats going on, but from my perspective everything went great...' And that was it, there was no amount of attempting to get to the root of the problem, bringing anyone else into the equation etc. And honestly, that is just the start, I was on a feeding tube and he forgot to feed me or give me fluids for 4 days, I was so weak and drugged up so I didnt know. Got a viral infection that spread to my heart, that wasnt caught until I was having a heart attack. Its been thousands of dollars, missed work, PTSD and I will be dealing with the ramifications for the rest of my life.

Degrading, doesnt care about patients or helping
felt like my appointment was a burden. my wuestions were dismissed mostly and the ones he did vaguely answer were with very degrading responses. My health conditions that i was concerned about he admitted he had no knowledge of because he didnt have time to look at my chart- im that much of a burden that he couldnt even glance at my chart or have his nurse do it. I walked out of this appointment feeling like i just wasted a year trying to get cleared for this surgery just for him to tell me i need to stop eating completely. Ignored my explination and frustration with my struggle to get to weight which i am barely shy of and he told me that i need to lose ANOTHER 10 pounds and i have about 2 weeks to do this... Made me feel like absolute junk about myself, my options for resolving my medical problems and hope for my future. I do not recommend going through him. I have never been degraded and belittled so badly. I am trying but he doesnt care about patients or helping us.

Dr.Leslie preformed my Rny Gastric Bypass surgery in 2010. I highly recommend Dr. Leslie due to his care and concern for his patients. I kept the weight off for years until an auto accident. He gave me some key takeaways after recovery.

VSG Patient, Surgery September 2023
I had VSG surgery with Dr. Leslie in September of 2023. The surgery and recovery went flawlessly, and I felt like Dr. Leslie and his team really care and his team are very supportive even after surgery. Most appointment were done virtually, so it was very convenient. Scarring is minimal and healed very quickly. It did seem like he pretty much exclusively does sleeves, or I felt like that was my only option. I'm glad now however that I went with the VSG, as it is lower risk with fairly similar expected outcome. This surgery has been life changing/ life saving. Words cannot express my gratitude to Dr. Leslie and his amazing team! I'm no longer prediabetic and no longer have high blood pressure. Down 53 lbs since surgery and 100 lbs since the start of the program. I have my life back. Thank you will never be enough.

I had a type of gastric surgery, biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (or DS for short.) It's a complex surgery that involves removing part of the stomach and rerouting the intestines by cutting and joining. He did it laparoscopically which adds difficulty but makes it much easier on the patient and speeds recovery. Dr. Leslie did the surgery in2010 and I have never had a problem with it. Also, when I asked for this surgery, Dr. Leslie told me if I were a family member of his, he'd steer me away from it because of the bariatric surgeries, it's the most risky and has the most side effects. It's also much more expensive than the other weight-loss surgeries, so he's got to be making more money off it, but he was more concerned about my well-being. (I opted for this surgery because it has the best long-term success rate and have never regretted it.) Based on my experience with Dr Leslie, I trust him and would ask for him in any future surgeries I may have.

I don't know where to begin! I've never had surgery ever before; let's just say I was nervous. I was scheduled 7/27/21 to get the VSG surgery and I had some questions, Dr. Leslie made a point to answer but he took the time to create a rapport and that decreased my fears. The staff was AMAZING! I was taken care of from the start to the end. I got discharged and they had my medications already filled. Not to mention I had to wait on my slow ride for pickup and the escort waited until they arrived. I have minimal scaring and that told me he's aware of cares about that! I'm so grateful I chose Dr. Leslie and his team. A big thanks to Dr. Leslie & M Health Fairview

Very caring. Very interested in my long-term weight loss rather than just operating on me. He was my weight loss surgeon at the University of Minnesota. I'm doing really well three months after surgery. The dietitians and Clinic are great. Parking is tough.

I found Dr. Leslie to be a very thorough bariatric surgeon. I had a lap band placed in 2007. Dr. Leslie was always there for me through the ups and downs of maintaining a lap band. I ended up having to have the band removed due to an injury unrelated to the band itself. It has been a few years since my band is removed. I am ready to pursue another bariatric surgery and did not even have to think twice to go to Dr. Leslie again.

He never examined me, made a quick look at test results, and the scare-mongering began. He told me I needed surgery ASAP to remove my unnecessary galbladder although no ultrasound was performed. He was unwilling to consider any other treatments. My questions/concerns were dismissed. He sounded just like a used car salesman selling surgery. Ultrasound confirmed no stones. I did a home galbladder flush for my biliary sludge and fixed the problem. Kept my galbladder too! Avoid him at all costs.

Re: Weight Loss Management and Surgery at University of Minnesota Health and specifically Dr. Daniel Leslie -- after 9 months in this program, complying with everything asked of me, I had not lost any weight. When I emailed Dr. Leslie to ask for help, he had his nurse call me instead of calling me himself. She was rude and told me to find another bariatric center. I deserved better treatment than this arrogance & being dismissed. I would NOT recommend going to the U of MN for bariatric surgery.

I just saw Dr. Leslie for post-surgery complications (extreme pain, fever, chills, shaking, dizziness, night sweats, diarrhea, inability to eat). He didn't even take time to have me lie on the exam table & check for abnormalities. He wouldn't order tests because (according to him) it costs 90% more to test for a problem than to just treat it. So he just wants to experiment on me without a diagnosis. Meanwhile my symptoms are horrific and dangerous. Where's the empathy and patient care?
