Never
In one word…DON’T! Very negative experience, misdiagnosed issue, spent less than 5 minutes with us, didn’t look at MRI results, indicated in notes that he had done thorough exam but didn’t even examine my husband. You can find a better physician in this same practice.

Dr. Dean recommended an inappropriate total knee replacement for me as treatment for a medial meniscus lesion. Medial meniscus lesions are easily treated by a simple laparoscopic procedure. By chance I have encountered two other patients who have had terrible experiences. One, a 300 lb. woman who was advised by UVA physicians to lose 50 lbs before knee surgery, received two total knee replacements simultaneously by Dr. Dean. A simple difference of medical opinion or something else? Another man I met had post-op complications from complex knee surgery by Dr. Dean. Further medical review indicated that Dr. Dean never completed the original surgery.

Dr. Dean did not wash hands when entering room, during COVID crisis. Barely examined my arm and asked few questions. Spent 2.5 minutes with me. Ordered an MRI that took a month to get scheduled. Office called me 2 days before MRI to tell me insurance wouldn't cover until I had PT. I have a very common insurance plan, they should have known how they operated. My pain has worsened since appointment. My elbow has been black for 4 months and atrophied. Now I have to wait several more months to get MRI. Will be going to UVA who knows what they are doing.

I went to Dr. Dean for shoulder pain. After a thorough exam and x rays, he talked to me about possible treatment options and, together, we settled on trying a steroid injection and physical therapy. Unfortunately, I didn't make a full recovery so I called back and he ordered an MRI. He was quick to call with the results and explained everything to me over the phone. I came in and was quickly scheduled for a rotator cuff repair. The surgery went very well and I am back to doing the things I love!
