Dr. Carl Dettwiler, MD

Unfortunately, I never got to meet Dr. Dettwiler because they cancelled my colonoscopy due to my blood pressure being too high. My first appointment for a Friday was cancelled because he was “sick” but rescheduled for the following Monday. My appointment today was cancelled after all the prep because they said my blood pressure was too high. I told the nurse I get white coat pressure before she even took it and mentioned to her that I was feeling very anxious. They mentioned nothing about blood pressure or anxiety in their prep paperwork, nor did they offer to let me rest for longer than 7 minutes and have the procedure after my anxiety died down. I will never go back to their clinic. All of that prep for absolutely nothing and they did nothing to offer an alternative.

Dr. Dettwiler and staff did a good job for my procedure. I would go to Dr. Dettwiler for the procedure again. It is scary to be put to sleep during a procedure and they did a good job of explaining the positives and negatives of the procedure.

The nurses on staff were mostly lovely, friendly, and gentle, but Dr. Dettwiler was impatient, pompous, and unwilling to listen to my concerns. One of the nurses in the operating room had her mask below her nose and wasn't paying attention, so when the anesthesiologist told me to "bite down on the mouthpiece" as I was going under, I didn't have anything to bite. I had to repeat myself twice, groggy with anesthesia, before the nurse snapped out of it and inserted the mouthpiece into my mouth. I also developed a bacterial infection in my throat a few days after the procedure. Again, most of the staff was so sweet and kind, but that was nowhere near enough to make up for how awful the experience was.

In the last year, I have learned more about my condition and received more thorough care and courtesy from Dr. Dettwiler ( and his Assistant Linda Dewitt) than I did from 4 other gastroenterologists in 3 states over the last 15 years. The office staff manage things very well, also kind and considerate.

Dr. Detwiler and his staff are very courteous and always helpful. They never leave you waiting in the waiting area for a long length of time. Always very friendly. He always explains what he is going to do and always makes one feel comfortable and in good hands. His Nurse Practioner is very helpful and friendly.
