Excellent surgeon
I was referred to Dr Richards by my doctor. I've had 15 years of back pain, which was getting worse the last 3 years. Dr Richards has resolved all my issues, with a spinal fusion. I feel great and cannot recommend Dr Richards more highly. He's an excellent surgeon and I don't think I could have had a better experience.

Poor treatment
He was the on-call Neuro surgeon during my stay at the Ascension Providence Hospital in Novi. I was immediately treated like garbage all because I had questions about my care and the procedures he wanted done to me. It started at 430am when a team from another department came him to have me sign paperwork to approve a procedure I knew nothing about it why it was being done. I was also heavily sedated and on pain meds. I was with it enough to say no because I had no idea what they were talking about or why they were there and that I wanted to speak to the Neuro surgeon first before I agreed to anything. He sent them in two more times through out the day before finally coming to see me, which was him being annoyed he had to speak to the lowly patient. I wasn't questioning his choice of care, I was asking WHY he chose that and what I could expect. Apparently he expects you to just listen to him as if he was a god and not ask questions about anything.

Miracle worker
Dr Richards has done four of my six spinal fusion surgeries. Today, I can walk and enjoy life without the tremendous pain I was in before those surgeries. I was told that I’d probably have to get a pain pump or neurostimulator implanted, but then I went to him and I never looked back. Add to that the fact that he has the best bedside manner of any doctor I’ve ever met and it’s no question who the best spinal surgeon in Metro Detroit is.

I had spinal surgery on 04/06/2022. I was treated very well all through the process. I am doing very well. used prescribed medication for only a few days and my follow up visit went fine. I will definitely recommend him to anyone and of course go myself if necessary.

My experience with Dr. Richards and his staff was great. Great sense of humor but more importantly very gifted surgeon. He performed an anterior cervical decompression and fusion of C5-6. Virtually no pain after the surgery. I know 3 people who have had similar surgeries by other surgeons and they were surprised I had almost no pain afterward. I would highly recommend him.

I went to see Dr. Richards after dealing with debilitating headaches since 2007. Five years ago I was diagnosed with Intracranial Hypertension. Until now I was on meds and frequent lumbar punctures to drain excess spinal fluid. I came to Dr. Richards because a lumboperitoneal shunt was needed. I was scared and nervous. On the day of surgery, the entire staff was kind and understanding of my nerves. When Dr Ricahrds came to see me in pre-op I voiced my concerns about the surgical pain afterward and he was honest and upfront about the pain I would have and that he promised to take care of that for me with good pain meds. My surgery was two weeks ago so I cannot say that my headaches I was having prior to surgery are completely gone but I will say that it is considerably better. Dr Richards is the kind of surgeon that you want for you or your loved ones. He takes time to answer all of your concerns and questions. He is so sweet, kind-hearted, intelligent, warm, and comforting. I will most

When Dr. Richards encouraged me to visit a public review site, such as this one, to assist other patients even before my scheduled surgery, I felt my health and well-being were his priority. He clearly wants the best outcome for his patients. I had a lumbar microdiscectomy in May, 2019. Nearly three months post-surgery, I can say my recovery was pain free and my overall health has greatly improved due to my increased activity level and complete elimination of pain. The staff and overall office environment were helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. I would highly recommend Dr. Richards and Michigan Spine and Brain Surgeons.

Not good. He is one his third(3) assistant since Feb 2019. Never returns a phone calls, take months for appointments. Even when you just had surgery. Seems like he wants to do a lot of surgeries, but has very little time for his patients after their surgeries. Very disappointed.

I was very nervous about having my spinal cord stimulator replaced. The doctor, who originally implanted my first stimulator, no longer performed surgery. Dr Richards made me comfortable from the very start! He is extremely knowledgeable & a very calming nature. I immediately knew I was going to be in great hands! On the day of surgery, he came into my room & spent quality time with my husband & I! I formerly worked in an Operating Room. Many of the surgeons I had worked with did not spend ve

As a health professional myself, I reviewed, got recommendations from the surgical community, and am more than pleased with the quality of health care I received from Dr. Richards and his staff. My surgery went uneventfully and after many failed conservative treatments by other providers, I awoke from anesthesia completely pain free. Dr. Richards exceptional surgical skill is only surpassed by his genuine concern for each patient. I recommend him highly and have already done so many times.

Two doctors from separate offices, highly recommended Doctor Richards to me to do my spinal surgery. I did my research and learned that he is the best! He has an easy going personality which I loved. After research on my own, I felt like I was in extremely capable hands. He has great people skills taking his time explaining to me every aspect of my surgery. I never felt he was in a hurry with me to get to his next patient. My surgery was a huge success and I'm excited for my future.
