Dr. Umapathi is a fantastic surgeon.
Fecal incontinence is NOT something a woman wants to talk about -- it is embarrassing, but evidently a common problem. When I was referred to Dr. Umapathi by my gastroenterologist at Capital Digestive Care, I was terrified. Dr. Umapathi (and everyone in her office) was polite, compassionate, and knowledgeable. My surgery in June proved Dr, Umapathi to be an expert in her practice. She fixed things!! She listens and she answers questions. She is a marvel!!

Dismissive of symptoms during recovery
Might be a good surgeon, but if you’re having any difficulties during the recovery process, she is very dismissive of your symptoms. She does not take time to listen. She got up and started walking out the room while I was asking questions at two separate appointments. If you call the office, her secretary will try to provide medical advice without asking the doctor.

Exceptional doctor and surgeon
I received a diagnosis that required surgery of the small intestine to remove cancerous tumors. Dr. Bindu Umapathi was recommended for the surgery by my gastroenterologist and several acquaintances in the medical profession who knew her expertise with my problem. I am glad I listened to them. From the first office visit to the eventual surgery, hospital visits, and follow-up appointment Dr. Umapathi was exceptional in the time she spent to give me thorough and understandable descriptions of each step towards my recovery. She listened and responded to my concerns throughout this journey. As a testament to her surgical skills, in a 5-hour process to remove 5 tumors and many lymph nodes, I rebounded quickly and began walking the hospital corridors the next day. I will always remember her attention and concern for my comfort and recovery in the hospital.

The best doctor you can hope for!
Dr. Umpathi is the best doctor you can ask for in the DC-area to help with uncomfortable gastro-related problem(s). She is not only a great doctor, but she is also personable, funny, and very down to earth. Just as important, she helped me understand why I was having problems, propose a course of corrective action, and actually fix me! I hope I will not need a doctor with her expertize again, but if I do, I know where to find Dr. Umapathi. She is truly the best.

Understanding and Compassionate Physician and Team
My experience with Dr. Umapathi, Wendy, and her surgical team has been incredible! I have felt validated and reassured starting from the first consultation, all the way through surgery and now in the post-surgical phase. As a woman in her 20s, having a complete rectal prolapse and enterocele was not something I knew anything about, nor something I knew anyone else to have experienced. Previous physicians doubted that my symptoms were related to a rectal prolapse, despite me asking about that, and never did a full examination due to my age. Dr. Umapathi never once doubted my concerns or made me feel uncomfortable or judged for what I was experiencing. She thoroughly listened to my symptoms, answered my questions, and helped me feel reassured throughout all of our appointments. I highly recommend working with Dr. Umapathi for colorectal concerns! She has been so wonderful and truly cares about her patients, and I am extremely grateful to have her as my physician!

Exceptional Care for LGBT Patients
Having undergone a total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis performed by Dr. Bindu Umapathi, I am compelled to share my exceptional experience. Dr. Umapathi's expertise in colorectal surgery is undeniably brilliant, but it's her compassionate approach that truly sets her apart. As a member of the LGBT community, I found her understanding of our specific health concerns and needs to be deeply reassuring. She provided comprehensive care that addressed all aspects of my well-being, ensuring that my lifestyle post-surgery would be as fulfilling as possible. It's rare to find a surgeon who combines such high-level medical skills with a genuine sensitivity to the unique experiences of LGBT patients. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Umapathi to anyone in the LGBT community seeking colorectal surgical care. Her professionalism, empathy, and inclusive approach make her an outstanding choice.

Incredible surgeon, Incredible team!
I cannot rave more about Dr. Umapathi and her incredible team. She really helps you understand your condition, and her work is incredible. The results from my procedure were excellent, and it's in part because of how she walked me through it, and availed herself to me to ask questions before and after. Wendy is the jewel in the crown of Dr. Umapati's practice, along with the STELLAR staff at the surgical center in Bethesda. Excellence all the way around!

She cared for me like she was my sister!
Imagine having an excellent surgeon in your family who you know will take excellent care of you ~ that’s how Dr. Umapathi treated me. She looked over all my reports and tests with the greatest of detail and she was concerned with my whole health, physical and mental, not just my digestive issue - such as recommending another Dr. and testing for something she saw on my pancreas. She is one of the most detailed, caring and consistently dependable people I've ever had the opportunity to trust. As a bonus she is very personable, kind and friendly. Don’t hesitate to put your trust in her- she’s a 10!

Wonderful physician
I was so lucky to find Dr. Umapathi. I needed a surgeon and I called so many places and they were not helpful and all booked. I called her office and they were helpful and found an appointment for me. My wait time was minimal if at all. She was kind, compassionate, competent and most of all she fixed my problem WITHOUT surgery! She answered all my questions (there were 15) and even appreciated that I brought her an article that related to my issue. She is a find because great doctors are hard to find. Thank you for great care!

Best bedside manner
Dr. Umapathi has the best bedside manner of any doctor I have seen in years. Given her area of practice, I was very uncomfortable going into this visit. Her compassion and patience was remarkable and set me at ease. She is one of the rare physician who takes time to listen and talk with her patients, which is amazingly refreshing. Ultimately, she steered me toward a non-surgical course of treatment, which I also appreciated. I truly felt she had my best interests at heart.

Dr. Umapathi Deserves Ten Stars For Outstanding
I have been seeing Dr. Bindu Umapathi since June 2018 when she performed a life saving colorectal cancer surgery on me to remove a cancerous tumor in my rectum. She performed the Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) which is a surgery very few colorectal surgeons are skilled to perform. She removed all the cancerous cells and my recuperation period was only two weeks, and this was amazing because the usual recuperation period from colorectal surgery without TAMIS would have been six months! Dr. Umapathi also specializes in the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors; and I am very fortunate because the cancer tumor she removed was a neuroendocrine tumor which is a very rare form of cancer that many colorectal surgeons are not familiar with. In addition to being an amazingly skilled colorectal surgeon, Dr. Umapathi is compassionate, personable, has a wonderful bedside manner and is a healer in every sense of the word. I am very blessed to have Dr. Umapathi on my medial team.
