Dismissive
I am a Mental Health Therapist and was SHOCKED with her attitude regarding Autism. When I told her my son is on the Autism Spectrum, her response was, I think everyone is a little bit.” I also didn’t think she showed interest in answering questions or asking questions to thoroughly understand and assess or follow up when she didn’t have an answer for my symptoms of a hip problem.

I have been seeing Dr. Abell for the past 20 years. She always listens to my concerns as minimal as the might seem and tries to find answers for me. No matter how busy she is or how many patients she sees in a day, she remembers the small but important details of my health care. When I called for depression I was seen within a day, and my concerns were taken very seriously, she worked with me to make sure that we found the right medication for my depression, and continues to check in to make sure that it is still working for me after three years.

Dismissive of concerns most of the time. I spent years with symptoms that when I changed doctors finally got addressed. Children with autism and/ or adhd had symptoms dismissed as they’ll “grow out of it. It’s normal..” and further evaluation was discouraged for years, delaying diagnosis and treatment for many years. The damage done from delayed treatment is concerning.

I have been with Dr. Abell for over 15 years. My daughter has grown up seeing Dr Abell as her PCP and getting to know and trust her assistant Terri during those years. My daughter now a mother herself has continued to see Dr Abell for her care. Having a long time relationship with your doctor is a good indication that the doctor cares about their patients, and their patients trust their doctor. Dr Abell does care and will listen to a patients concerns. When she makes a diagnosis, she gives a patient the choice of following her advice and recomendations or making their own choice of treatment options. She will also recommend you to a great Specialist if the problem is beyond the scope of her expertise.

I do not recommend Dr. Abell. I had her for many years as a teen with severe depression and anxiety, which was brushed off as wanting drugs and manifested into school problems and worse. I also asked her about ADD/ADHD, in an effort to identify my own problems, took a questionnaire to my teacher and my parent to fill out, which indicated that I had a high possibility of ADD, and that was ignored when I brought it back to her. She did take my worry about a breast lump very seriously, and I am grateful for that. As an adult I am finally getting sensible care, and hope that my own children will have a doctor who cares about their mental well being, not brushing them off as if they are a drug addict.

Even though my father died of a heart attach and my mother had 3 heart attacks she showed little concern with my concern of heart health. Brushed offed my issues of shortness of breath to my holding my breath when doing things.

I do not recommend this physician if you or your child has Autism. This physician completely missed that diagnosis with my child despite my concerns and 3 years of well care visits. Dr. Abell is very friendly but seems to struggle with examining a child with special needs. (My child is very anxious at the doctor and poses a bit of a physical struggle). It is often hard to get an appointment with this office as well.
