I saw Dr. Van Niel over a period of 5 years while I was a student at MIT. He is a great listener, compassionate, and nonjudgmental. I highly recommend him if you're looking for a healthcare provider who is clear about what he sees are obstacles to your improvement and is invested in helping you manage your medication to best suit your personal needs to function. He takes time at every appointment to assess how you are doing emotionally, and he makes sure you are integrated and educated about your care plan.

On the contrary to the above: I saw Dr Van Niel for several years at MIT, and I always found him to be compassionate, nonjudgmental, and willing to listen. For me, he combined these qualities with a good amount of reality-checking and encouragement to address my problems. That may not be what everyone needs or wants out of therapy - which is fine! - but Dr Van Niel can be very effective depending on what you're hoping to gain.

Psychiatrist at MIT Medical. Not helpful; can be condescending and dismissive. Would not recommend to other students. .
