Best doctor ever
I can't express enough how grateful I am to have Dr. Andrew F. Colhoun as my urologist. During one of the most challenging times of my life with a cancer diagnosis, Dr. Colhoun exhibited exceptional bedside manner that set him apart as the best doctor I've ever had. He delivers advice with incredible wisdom—never once making me feel judged or condemned. His positivity is both genuine and grounded, offering hope without ever venturing into unrealistic territory.Dr. Colhoun strikes the perfect balance between being encouraging and realistic, which is exactly what you need when facing a daunting medical journey. He’s the kind of person you’d want beside you in a foxhole during combat—steadfast, reliable, and unshakeable. I highly recommend Dr. Colhoun to anyone seeking not just medical expertise but compassionate, supportive care.

Dr. Colhoun/Virginia Urology Review/Stony Point
Dr. Colhoun is a wonderfully patient, kind, understanding and very easy to understand physician who took his time answering my many questions and explaining every item that I needed clarification on. Dr. Colhoun’s bedside manner is top notch and he was always willing to break down any medical terms and my diagnosis into simple and easy to understand words. After my office visit, he scheduled me for a CAT scan to further investigate my urinary tract issues and the follow up appointment was only one half hour after completion of the CAT scan. I was appreciative to have Dr. Colhoun’s consultation immediately after the CAT scan and being able to get the finals results so timely. Patricia, Dr. Colhoun’s administrative assistant in his office, is such a fantastic asset to his department and to Virginia Urology as well. Patricia took her time to explain the testing I would have, got the scan scheduled before I left the building and I had it only two days after my initial consultation.

My son.
After seeing the primary care provider my son was referred to this provider. My son has been to see him on 2 occasions. He did not give him any follow up care instructions. I advised my son to go back and this time we still don’t know the root of the pain. Waste of time and copay!

Dr. Calhoun promised lab test results in 24 to 48 hours, but most definitely by the end of the week. After 3 days, I called for results and was told it could take up to a week. How can a doctor let you suffer with a UTI for a week. All he said when I left the office was "hang in there". No compassion.

I sent my 18 year old son in for a visit. Dr. Colhaun was an hour late, was abrasive, unsympathetic and the appointment was a waste of time and money. If you are looking for a compassionate, knowledgeable physician that searches for answers, look elsewhere.

I used to work in Urology and am very familiar with the field. As a patient, I would not recommend Dr. Calhoun. He was rude and condescending, suggestive of a large ego. As a nurse, I am hoping that ego is because he's an excellent surgeon but it's no excuse to treat someone in need like how they feel doesn't matter.

Dr. Colhoun is patient and and answers my questions about my Gleason 3+4. I also think that he is non-interventionist as appropriate. I am surprised to see the negative reviews here. One time I saw him he was in a hurry at the end of the day but usually very attentive. I had previously seen another MD at VU who was a fairly recent grad and he was not patient. He used a transcriber in the room which I felt was strange and an invasive of my privacy. Dr. Colhoun does not use a transcriber and takes time answering questions.

Dr. Andrew Colhoun really does not seem to care. If VA Urology suggests him as a provider, save yourself money and weeks of pain and ask for someone else Everything he did revolved around treating symptoms instead of addressing actual causes to those symptoms. I had several visits with him to get to the bottom of my problem, and the only success i had was when i did the research myself and recommended my own treatment plan. I went to another provider at VA urology after having such a terrible experience with Dr. Colhoun, and the other provider tells me that 30% of the men that come in have the same issue I was having. If so many patients are coming in with this issue, why was it such a mystery to Dr. Colhoun. Dr. Colhoun has checked out. Meet with a different doctor who will at least pretend to care at a minimum.

My father had bladder spasms and Dr. Colhoun gave him meds that made him not able to walk across the floor. Then when we requested a change, he did not even take the time to get anything else in to the pharmacy. Mind you my father was in pain and is 97 1/2. He does not care. DO NOT GO TO HIM!

I have had two appointments with Dr. Colhoun in the past two weeks. On both occasions, he and the staff were prompt and attentive. Dr. Colhoun listened carefully to my questions and problem and answered with sensible advice and treatment options. He did not make me feel as if he was rushed or distracted. I would have no qualms recommending him to anyone in need.
