Dr. Crowell disregarded the symptoms I told her and based her opinion entirely on how I presented the information. Because I come off as put together and coherent, she decided I don't have psychotic symptoms and that my depression is not severe enough to warrant more 'invasive' methods. She ignored my psychiatric history that shows I have tried nearly every mood stabilizer and many antipsychotic medications. I struggle on a daily basis, and though I am able to hold a full-time job, I am frequently plagued by violent, suicidal ideation and worse. Her suggestion: try a different mood stabilizer (treatment to which I have shown consistent resistance) or go into an intensive therapy program. Her reasoning: ECT would interrupt my life too much. However, I cannot keep my job while part of an intensive outpatient program, nor can I afford twice weekly therapy as she suggested. My suggestion to her is to take into account that a patient might be masking and to try to actually listen.

After years of intensive therapy I have no diagnosis and nowhere to go. Going to her was the worst mistake of my life. She is a good example of the fact that sometimes qualifications alone don’t make you a great doctor. She lacks empathy and life experience
