Miracle Worker
Dr. Cohen performed brain surgery on my 7-year-old son to remove a large tumor. Even while on vacation, he called and texted us, patiently answering every question. Before surgery, he drove straight from the airport to meet us, knowing we needed to see him before entrusting him with our son’s life. His kindness and reassurance made an unimaginable situation a little more bearable.Conor’s surgery lasted eight hours. When Dr. Cohen walked into the waiting room, smiling with a picture of Conor smiling, we knew—the tumor was gone, and it was benign. He had saved our son.During Conor’s five-day hospital stay, Dr. Cohen visited daily, talking, joking, and answering every question. He even gave us his personal cell phone, ensuring we had direct access to him. Days later, Conor was back to running and climbing. Dr. Cohen’s skill is unmatched, but his compassion truly sets him apart. We will be forever grateful.

Caring and competent
Dr. Cohen removed my 7-month-old son’s dermoid cyst overlying the anterior fontanelle (“soft spot”). I was so anxious about the cyst until I met Dr. Cohen. He immediately conveyed a sense of calm, kindness and confidence that offered peace of mind. The cyst was successfully removed without any complications. We are so thankful.

Dr. Cohen single handedly saved our daughters life! He was the most knowledgeable, compassionate, kind human being. From the moment he walked into our lives, he treated our daughter like she was his only and most special patient. He allowed her to assist with decision making and gave her the little bits of control she was able to have during a time that everything was out of control. We love Dr. Cohen and are forever indebted to he and his team! He will forever be a part of our family for holding us close during this horrific time in our lives.

Dr. Cohen is an Angel on Earth.
I was introduced to Dr. Cohen less than 24 hours after I found out my four year old son had a large brain tumor. From the beginning, he was informative, supportive, and caring. He explained the procedure, our options, answered every question we had & made us feel confident that our son was in the right hands. After surgery, Dr. Cohen was there many times a day checking in on us & our son. I cannot thank Dr. Cohen and his team enough for the work they did to help my son. We have a long road ahead of us - but our son is doing okay. Thank you, Dr. Cohen. Thank you so much.

Most Personable Surgeon Ever!
Frustrated with my regular walking gait having changed to a shuffle combined w/ memory issues, I eventually was sent for an MRI that revealed I had a colloid cyst at the base of my brain. I was advised to go directly to Johns Hopkins Hospital. The term "providence" comes to mind. Johns Hopkins Hospital has been in my backyard all my life and I just didn't realize the world-renowned talent they have there until this incident. Dr. Alan Cohen was assigned to me and was very personable. He didn't mind my repeated questions and showed empathy/compassion as well as excitement when I remembered the little stuff. What made me fall in love w/ him was when he called me on my mobile phone from another spot in the hospital pre-surgery to check in on me, a chitty-chat. I just had a 6 week post-surgery meeting with him and he continued to knock my socks off. He said: "You do know that I'm a pediatric surgeon, don't you?". I responded: "Yes. It's a good thing becaue I'm a big baby!"

Saved my wife!
My wife admitted to the Johns Hopkins ED for a colloid cyst discovered on MRI ordered by her neurologist. She was directed to the JHU emergency dept where a neurosurgeon would be on staff. That's where she encountered Dr. Alan Cohen. He showed himself to be a brilliant, humble and skilled physician. He admitted her and scheduled her for the next tentatively available surgery opening a few days later. He patiently waited as most of the day ticked by before the OR could give him and his team the room. I don't know how he manages a schedule like he does but he was ready to operate all morning, afternoon and finally got to use the room at 6PM. His team finished at 11pm. They literally saved my wife's life and restored her gait as well as excising the tumor while sparing the other delicate structures around it. Do I recommend Alan Cohen? I'd like to rent a plane and fly a banner behind it all over the skies of Maryland pronouncing his unique God given talent and kindness.

Totally agree with all comments. Dr. Cohen is such a great doctor with exceptional expertise and cutting edge technology. He was full of energy and meticulous, answering thousands of questions and explaining in detail, which greatly eased our anxiety. After 10+ hours of surgery starting at 5:30 a.m., he still came to see the patient at night. The results of the surgery were excellent and our son was discharged on the fourth morning. My limited words cannot express all my gratitude to Dr. Cohen and his great team.

Excellent care
Dr. Cohen and the entire staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital went above and beyond in every facet of the care given to our daughter. He continuously checked in on our daughter and even made a few calls after we returned home to check on her status. Everyone at the entire hospital went above and beyond with politeness and helping us. You could tell that doctor Cohen truly cares about what he did and the people he and the staff were helping.

Dr. Cohen and his team performed a critical operation for my six-year old child to remove a tumor in his brain. From the initial consultation to the post surgery follow-ups, I could not have asked for anything more from Dr. Cohen. From the communication, the check-ups, and general level of care, it was exceptional, and I felt as though we were his only patients. In addition to Dr. Cohen, his support team of residents and care coordinators could not have been more kind and helpful throughout this process. I'm truly in awe of his expertise, and the level of care I have received from everyone on the team and at Hopkins in general. There were difficult decisions that we had to make as a family and Dr. Cohen helped us navigate and inform us of all our options. I am truly thankful that we were lucky enough to receive the his care and support.

Dr. Cohen is my daughters neurosurgeon. She had surgery on Monday June 28th. Dr. Cohen is truly a one of a kind doctor, I could not say enough great things about him and his office staff. Kim his office manager is always so nice and polite and extremely helpful. Dr. Cohen took time to listen to our concerns about our daughter, explained everything in great detail, he even called my daughters pediatrician on a Saturday on his free time to talk with her about my daughter. His communications with her other providers shows his level of dedication to his patients. When my daughter was in the hospital after surgery he came up to check on her every morning and every afternoon and evening which made me and my husband much more at ease with what was going on. Dr. Cohen has always answered all our questions and had even called us when we did not have an appointment to discuss our daughter.

We owe absolutely everything to Dr. Cohen and his team at Johns Hopkins. This past Winter, our 7 moth old son fell while in the care of another and suffered a fractured skull that resulted in an epidural hematoma. We were extremely lucky that we were able to get our son into the care of Dr. Cohen, for he was very close to succumbing from his injuries. Our lives were shattered that day, but Dr. Cohen was able to save our little man's life from such a tragic event. He checked in on us every single day while we were at Hopkins, and always had time to answer our questions. He is an amazing person, and while our lives changed forever on that day – Dr. Cohen and his team gave us our son back, and we will be forever grateful for their incredible hard work and dedication. Thank you, Dr. Cohen.

Dr. Cohen is an amazing Neurosurgeon, and an even more amazing human being. I owe him everything that is good in my life. He saved the life of my Life-Partner, over 28 years ago, after a traumatic head trauma event. Billy suffered an injury that easily could have resulted in his death, but due to Dr. Cohen, his amazing neurological surgery skills, and his passion to do his very best, he saved Billy's life. He takes every families' significant events and makes them his own. We recently celebrated Billy's "2nd Birthday" and Dr. Cohen went above and beyond on this day to reach out to Billy via email and a personal phone call! That was a moment in our lives that we will never forget. Dr. Cohen, I told you this once, and it's worth repeating - You are an amazing Man, Neurosurgeon, and your compassion does not go unnoticed. You will always be welcomed in my home when you are in the Boston area, and you will always have a cheerleading team in the Sullivan household!

Dr. Cohen (affectionately known as Big Al) is the most compassionate, empathetic, genuine physician we have ever interacted with. His skill is unparalleled and his bed side manner puts others to shame. His concern for his patients is not just from a medical aspect, but rather a holistic one. He wants to engage with them and understands that as a Pediatric Neurosurgeon, there are two patients- the terrified parents and sick child. He ensures that every detail is covered and knows how to provide comfort when needed. He provides hope during hopeless times. Neurosurgery is a field that often breeds arrogance due to only the most skilled, highly intelligent doctors making the cut. Arrogance is not something you have to worry about with Big Al, in fact he's everything but that; arrogance isn't even in his dictionary. Rather, Big Al sings with his patients (Elvis is number 1), plays games and finds out about their hobbies and leaves the room in smiles. Quite simply put, HE IS THE BEST!

Dr. Cohen performed my son’s craniosynostosis surgery at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Cohen got in touch with me right away after leaving him a message explaining my son’s condition when my pediatrician alarmed me about craniosynostosis. His office had me scheduled within a few days. Dr. Cohen was very communicative and always checked in on my son before and after the procedure. Could not have imagined using another surgeon! Dr. Cohen went above and beyond to ensure a successful surgery and put us at ease through the whole process.

Finding the very best surgeon in the world when your child needs brain tumor surgery is challenging, but I believe after exhaustive research, I found him with Dr. Alan Cohen and the entire team at Johns Hopkins. Every decision made is a team effort made up of the top physicians in the world, pioneers in their field, some world-renowned, all experienced brain tumor experts. I appreciated input from a team of experts, sharing specialized knowledge from their respective disciplines. And I appreciated that Dr. Alan Cohen was at the helm. What was most impressive was the down-to-earth qualities and unpretentious personalities of each and every physician on our team. Dr. Cohen is one of (if not THE) top pediatric neurosurgeons in the world. To find this quality paired with a friendly, sweet, truly caring personality is as rare as my son's tumor! Dr. Cohen, You save a life today. And it was my son's. Forever Indebted
