Biography: Elan L. Goldwaser, DO, is a sports medicine physician specializing in the non-operative management of complex musculoskeletal conditions affecting athletic participation, including chronic and acute injuries affecting the bones, joints, and muscles of pediatric and adult patients. Dr. Goldwaser's training as an osteopathic physician provides additional treatment approaches to promote healing through a variety of options and tailored patient care. As an experienced team physician to high school, collegiate, and professional athletes, Dr. Goldwaser is accustomed to treating injuries sustained in the acute setting of sporting events including: management of concussions, tendon injuries, and leg somatic dysfunctions (including Achilles/Patellar tendonitis). As a former cross-country, track and field, and swimming collegiate athlete, Dr. Goldwaser understands the athlete's need to return to sport and is dedicated to helping people of all levels achieve this. He attended The College of New Jersey where he completed his Bachelor's in Biology, and later went on to Rowan-SOM for medical school and residency. Before coming to Columbia Orthopedics, Dr. Goldwaser completed a sports medicine fellowship at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, PA, honing skills in ultrasound diagnostics and minimally invasive sports medicine interventional procedures. Dr. Goldwaser's research spans multiple specialties which include: concussion management, prevention and recovery, biologic injections in injury recovery, and exploring healing rates after ultrasound-guided procedural interventions. When time allows, he enjoys running marathons, traveling, and playing Scrabble with his family.

Biography: Dr. Michael G. Vitale specializes in the non-operative and operative treatment of complex pediatric scoliosis and other spinal disorders, and performs approximately 200 scoliosis procedures every year, half of which are in children less than 8 years of age. Dr. Vitale has a special interest in innovative treatments for younger children with scoliosis, including the use of a magnetic spine lengthening device ("MAGEC") which eliminates the need to perform repeat spinal surgeries every 6-9 months on growing children, non-fusion procedures such as vertebral stapling and vertebral tethers, "growing rods," and the "Shilla" procedure. As part of his commitment to innovation in Scoliosis treatment, Dr. Vitale helps to lead the Children's Spine Study Group, which conducts extensive multicenter international research focused on improving the care of young people with scoliosis. Dr. Vitale also leads the Conservative Treatment of Scoliosis Center, with Co-Director Hagit Berdishevsky. One of the only programs of its kind, the Center focuses on avoiding surgery with attention to scoliosis specific Schroth physical therapy and state-of-the art expert brace options including the Rigo System Cheneau brace. For the youngest children with scoliosis, Dr. Vitale runs an active Mehta casting program and has successfully used this method to reverse spinal curvature in numerous patients. For those who need surgery, Dr. Vitale, also the Chief Quality Officer for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, has a focus on making sure every procedure is done in the safest possible way. In fact, Dr. Vitale has written extensively on best practices in the care of patients with scoliosis. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Vitale serves as director of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Research Group and leads the clinical research team in their efforts, which are often funded by multi-year grants, published in leading medical journals, and presented at national and international conferences. Under Dr. Vitale's leadership, the group has published over 150 peer reviewed publications in the field. In recognition of his clinical and academic leadership, Dr. Vitale has received numerous national awards from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America including the Arthur H. Huene Memeorial Award, the Angela M Kuo Award Young Investigator Award, the Robert Hensinger Scientific Paper Award, as well as the Hansjorg Wyss Research Award, the Frank Stinchfield Research Award, the Rosamond Kane Award in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, and the Harrison Mclaughin Award. Dr. Vitale also serves numerous roles in the national governance of the field currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, chairing the International Pediatric Orthopaedic Society, leading the efforts of the Scoliosis Research Society on Advocacy for Unmet Needs of Children for Pediatric Medical Devices, serving on the Executive Committee of the Children's Spine Study Group, and is a Member of the prestigious International Pediatric Orthopaedic Think Tank. Biography: Dr.Samuel Van de Velde, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at ColumbiaUniversity Irving Medical Center, is an orthopedic surgeon withNewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Brooklyn. He treats all aspects of the lowerlimb, including pediatric, adolescent, and young adult hip preservation, andsports pathology of the hip and knee. Dr. Van de Velde has a particular focuson specialized surgical interventions for hip and knee disorders, including:periacetabular Ganz osteotomies, femoral osteotomies, surgical hip dislocationand femoral capital realignment, hip arthroscopy, and anterior cruciateligament reconstruction, multi-ligament reconstruction, and meniscalsurgery. After medical school in Louvain, Belgium, Dr. Van de Velde joined the Bioengineering Laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where his NIH-funded research was commemorated with a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. While in Boston, Dr. Van de Velde was an Instructor in orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School and completed his master's degree at the Harvard School of Public Health. He also received the Ruth L. Kirschstein Award from the NIH and won the prestigious O'Donoghue Sports Injury Award together with Thomas J. Gill, IV, MD. After completing his orthopedic surgical training at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, Dr. Van de Velde visited the Royal Children's Hospital in Australia, and completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. He then completed an additional year of specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of hip pathology in children and young adults in Perth, Australia. Dr. Van de Velde has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and has presented his research at both national and international medical conferences. He is a reviewer for several medical journals and sits on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Dr. Van de Velde participated in two medical missions to the Comoros Islands in Africa, where he performed complex limb alignment, corrective surgeries, and trained local providers. He lives with his wife and three children on Park Slope in Brooklyn.

Biography: Joshua E. Hyman, MD, is a nationally and globally renowned specialist in the care of children with cerebral palsy and lower extremity deformity. His clinical interests as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon also include hip diseases and dysplasia, neuromuscular disorders, limb length differences, and complex fracture care. As Clinical Director of the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center, he helps oversee a team of medical professionals that carefully designs and executes personalized treatment programs for each and every patient to achieve the best possible outcomes. He is a staunch advocate for children with cerebral palsy, believing that they, like all children, require comprehensive healthcare. He is dedicated to ensuring the delivery of this high-quality care across the lifespan for patients with CP while also addressing the concerns of their families. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Hyman is a prolific scholar, dedicated medical educator, and mentor. He is actively involved in research trials on clubfoot, hip disorders, and neuromuscular diseases in pediatric patients. He is a founding member of the International Perthes Study Group and a member of the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. In 2013, he was awarded the Charles S. He is also co-founder and medical director of Miraclefeet, an international NGO focused on promoting the care of children with clubfoot in medically under-resourced regions.
