Hello. My name is Michael Knapik and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia and a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in Vermont. I am also certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors. I have been working in the mental health field since 2007. (Before pursuing this career, I was a professional journalist for 30 years.) My orientation is to focus on a client's strengths, because I believe that clients are the experts in their own lives and that the role of therapy is most often to assist clients in fully recognizing and using those strengths. My approach to therapy is eclectic. I draw on resources and interventions from positive psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, emotional freedom techniques, solution-focused therapy, compassion-focused therapy, and family systems. I have experience working with those who are struggling with anxiety, stress, addictive disorders, grief and loss, end-of-life issues (I was a hospice volunteer for 16 years), depression, and self-harming behaviors. I graduated from Alabama State University in 2011 with my MS in Clinical Mental health counseling. I have done a vast amount of work in all treatment modalities as well as various populations. Primarily I have worked with families, in the community, crisis and trauma centered work, as well as substance use and severe mental health illness. My drive in this field is to help individuals who are struggling to mentally get to a place of peace and be that ear that can help one process and sort out whatever struggles they may be facing where accessing family and friends is not an option. My most sought out modes of counseling that I find most effective are solution focused, Cognitive behavior, Motivational interviewing , and person centered. These modalities are typically centered around allowing my client to be heard, as well as creating a space of open dialogue for me to learn more about you, and find root causes of presenting problem and begin to explore ways to help either shift the dynamic or shift the though process of the situation to assist in making life fuller, manageable and peaceful.
