Rizwan Tahir, MD, joins MedStar Health as a neurosurgeon for the department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Tahir is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Rocco A. Armonda, MD, is director of Neuroendovascular Surgery for MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, surgical co-director for the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at MedStar Washington, and associate professor and director of Neurosurgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Dr. Armonda graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986 and from USUHS in 1990, with academic honors. His surgical internship and neurosurgery residency were completed at Walter Reed Army MEDCEN. He was selected for a fellowship in Cerebrovascular Surgery and Interventional Neuroradiology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadephia from 1997-99. He recently joined MedStar Health after a 31-year military career in which he was awarded the Bronze Star for service, the Army Medical Proficiency 'A' Designator for excellence in both clinical and academic medicine in 2009, and the Young Neurosurgeon's Award in 2005 from the AANS. He focuses on the areas of cerebrovascular disease, neurotrauma, and neurocritical care. He has advanced the use of multi-modal monitoring in the military and treatment techniques to patients with neurotrauma and stroke with both invasive and non-invasive monitoring. His seminal work includes the detection and treatment of traumatic cerebral vasospasm, traumatic pseudoaneurysms, decompressive craniotomy for wartime trauma, cranial-facial post-traumatic reconstruction, multimodal AVM treatments, and the design and deployment of the advanced neurointerventional operating room. His research efforts include clinical studies on the long-term outcomes of wartime post-hemicraniectomy patients, nanotechnology designed biologically active stents for neurovascular disease, non-invasive monitoring of cerebral blood flow, the neurovascular effects of blast injuries, and neurosurgical surgical simulators for hemicraniectomy training modules.

Daniel Felbaum, MD, is an endovascular neurosurgeon and member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the North American Skull Base Society (NASBS), and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). Dr. Felbaum is specialty trained and highly experienced in cerebrovascular, neuroendovascular, and general neurosurgery using both minimally invasive (percutaneous) methods and traditionally invasive operations for neurovascular diseases. As part of a team of neurosurgeons at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University Hospital, he is dedicated to creating individualized treatment plans for each patient that are delivered with collaborative care. He is passionate about providing stroke management and treatment as well as neuroendovascular surgery options to patients in the Washington, DC, region. Dr. Felbaum and his team are implementing an interventional treatment for strokes, called mechanical thrombolysis, focused on improving outcomes for stroke patients. Dr. Felbaum received his medical degree from Marshall University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He then joined Georgetown University Hospital for a six-year residency in neurological surgery before completing specialty fellowship training in combined open cerebrovascular with endovascular neurosurgery and neurocritical care at the Global Neurosciences Institute in Philadelphia. He has presented nationally on numerous occasions and has been published in several peer-review publications and book chapters on cerebrovascular neurosurgery and trauma.
