Adiel G. Smith, M.D. received his undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he majored in Mechanical Engineering with a specialty in medical device design. He then worked for four years at Johnson & Johnson, designing and helping to manufacture the first-ever drug-eluting cardiac stent. This experience motivated Dr. Smith to pursue a medical career. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Miami. Throughout his time in medical school, Dr. Smith performed research at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.After graduating from medical school, Dr. Smith completed his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospitalthe oldest eye hospital in America and the number 1 ranked residency program in the country. Dr. Smith is a board-certified diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology. He specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, ocular inflammation and infections, macular holes, macular puckers, and retinal detachments. ?After three years with a large multispecialty ophthalmology group in Palm Beach County, Dr. Smith opened up the South Florida Retina Institute in the heart of Aventura, Florida.
